Introduction:
The First Step an Introduction by Greg Gates
I. What is Hearing
As defined by the Bible
the meaning of hearing is the idea of a report and a recognition of that report or news.
Everyone say “Recognition”
For instance in Mk 1:21-28
In Cepernaum on a Sabbath(Saturday), Jesus teaching astonishes the people and the rulers with His teaching...
This unclean Spirit know who Jesus was (a demon who is not saved)
Jesus demonstrates His authority over the Demon(unclean spirit)...
They were all amazed
Jesus heals a Man with an Unclean spirit and verse 28 of Mk. 1 says...
Some versions use fame or other versions use news
So the hearing that brings about Faith is recognizing
the news
the fame
the report about Jesus.
[So then the question becomes, what have you heard???]
II.
What Have You Heard?
Now it is clear that if one is saved the Holy spirit is involved.
Also we can see that it is important what news; fame or report you’ve heard.
We need to recognize what Jesus told a Pharisee to know that the Spirit of God must be involved with salvation...
This man Nicodemus was listening and recognizing who Jesus was
however hearing alone never saves...
This temporarily confuses Nicodemus...
So Jesus explains more
Then Jesus gives more explanation...
Too many in the world hear and follow that which is of the flesh
if man created it; it is of the flesh
if man voted on it; it is of the flesh
if man authorized it; it is of the flesh
religious institutions have no authority to create anything spiritual
that authority and source is only found in God
if you hear and obey something not in the Bible then it can only give birth in the flesh.
What have you heard?
is it of man
or is it of God
[God’s Word only creates God’s purposes…]
III.
Where Your Hearing Takes You
We have a lesson in baptism coming up Sunday morning 9:30am you will have to attend that to learn more
however I want you to see that one can be baptized wrong
and it is because of what they heard
One who obeys God’s Word without addition or subtraction is one who is a Christian only
that is all that God’s Word makes
that is the only place His Word takes you
God makes this point at the beginning
the middle
and end of His book
This is why hearing is so important where God’s salvation is concerned
over time much has been added to God’s Word
over time much has been subtracted from God’s Word
[So what do we do about what we hear???]
IV.
What to do about Your Hearing
It is in the Bible that man finds salvation
It is not found in Man or human institutions
Just as you cannot divide up God’s Word
You cannot divide up God’s Church
that is mans doing and not God’s
We know that man does not like what truth provclaims
what the Bible teaches
what God commands
You have free will and you can choose what to obey
but there is only one Lord; one Faith; one Baptism
you get more than one by adding and subtracting
Sincerity is only good if it’s righteous
it’s only righteous if it comes from God
men are swayed by sincerity; God is not
Sincerity fools us into thinking we’re right
when all along we’ve been sincerely wrong...
When you hear the truth Boo; chapter and verse
harden not your hearts...
Conclusion:
Tonight we have covered Hearing as a part of God’s Plan of Salvation
tomorrow we’ll hear about Believing; Repenting and Confessing
if you’d like to arrange a study of the Bible let us know...
Today we’ve learned what is hearing
we’ve questioned those things we’ve heard
Hearing sets a destination for us
Something must be done about what we hear...
