A Change of Mind and Actions an Introduction by Tom Procich
if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
Introduction:
let’s continue looking at what it is to repent...

The Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary Repentance
REPENTANCE. The notion of repentance follows from the notion of sin. It suggests that sin is an act or attitude which can be corrected by some change in the person.
Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary Repentance
In its biblical sense repentance refers to a deeply seated and thorough turning from self to God.
The Greek word for “repentance” is a compound word derived from meta, meaning “after,” and suggesting “some type of change,” and nous, meaning “mind.” Thus, metanoia strictly denotes “a change of mind”—a rejection of past sinful ways. But it also connotes remorse for sin, accompanied by a desire to turn away from one’s sin and to God for salvation. Such repentance accompanies faith in Christ (Acts 20:21).

David is a wonderful example of repentance...
after taking a census...
And David said to God, “I have sinned greatly in that I have done this thing. But now, please take away the iniquity of your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.”
David again after being confronted by his sin of adultery with Bathsheba...
Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your steadfast love;
according to your abundant mercy
blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin!
For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is ever before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you may be justified in your words
and blameless in your judgment.
The Prodigal son in the New Testament...
And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
The Tax Collector in Luke 18...
But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’
Nineveh in the Old Testament...
If at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I intended to do to it.
And the people of Nineveh believed God. They called for a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.
It was John the baptist ministry to prepare the way for the Christ...
In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said,
“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord;
make his paths straight.’ ”
The 3000 souls on the day of Pentecost when the church was establsihed...
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
[ If man is to repent he needs to stop being close minded and arrogant He needs recognize his error in light of the scriptures…]

Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!
Our world is overly influenced by our fleshly desire and the prince of the air...
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—
You see our battle in this world for righteousness is never personal, it is spiritual...
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Therefore God Word must be proclaimed to the many opponents of God because the truth will set them and us free from the spiritual forces at work against us...
correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.
[ The type of reconsideration that is necessary must be a godly sorrow, one that results from a contradiction of the standard of truth which is God’s Word…]

For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.
When we are at odds with our own actions when they do not measure up to God’s standard then we can achieve true repentance...
but when we are contemplative about how to get away with and establish our wicked ways in the opposition of truth we cannot achieve true repentance
this is to say if you are only sorry because you got caught you are not really sorry
Remember repentance is a change of heart, it begins on the inside...
For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being,
So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.
that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being,
[ When we have a change of heart we have a change of life…]

Repentance is not what you say its about what you do...
Paul commended the church in Corinth for their Godly sorrow...
For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter.
We need to be like the children who do good when the parents aren’t present
that is the proper lifestyle
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,
Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.
We can close with David’s prayer to God in Psalm 51...
Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being,
and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit.
Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will return to you.
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God,
O God of my salvation,
and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.
O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth will declare your praise.
For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it;
you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
Conclusion:
Today we’ve seen that repentance is a change of mind and action.
A turning away from self; the world and the Prince of the Air
and turning to God
We understand that we need to examine ourselves in the light of scripture and not the measure of another person.
Do not assume that you are right before God. Humble yourself before Him.
Repent or Perish the Bible is clear, Jesus make a clear statement for your reconsideration
If we can recognize that our actions are in error with God’s commands and causes us grief then we can bring forth fruits of repentance
Then we can act in an approving way in every situation because we have effected a change in the inner man
The outer man is already judged and has been found wanting; flesh and blood will not inherit the Kingdom of Heaven
It’s not to late to change and it’s never to late to come to God
To see and do things His way is always appropriate no matter when you enter the vineyard it’s all the same pay - Heaven as Your Eternal Reward
