Despite the unfaithfulness in Israel’s history, there had to be a history of faithfulness for Paul to be where he is
Sometimes that was human faithfulness
Sometimes that was God breaking into human unfaithfulness with His own faithfulness
Paul’s thanks to God reminds Timothy of his spiritual heritage

Paul is equating the history of the Israelites to Timothy’s mother and grandmother
It would be easy for Timothy to look down on his spiritual heritage; however, Timothy has every bit as much of a heritage as Paul
Why is this heritage important?
Why should I pay attention? I’m not big into history/I don’t know these people
It reminds us that we are a part of something larger
Inheritances are like this!
Successes are multiplied and celebrated
Failures are not simply our own; they affect the community

Paul knows that difficult times are coming, and he won’t be able to encourage Timothy personally
Alexander and others betrayed Paul; there are people teaching false doctrines; the Roman empire is starting some local persecutions
It would be easy to make faith a private thing and avoid the trouble
Paul recognizes that the mission is to disciple and evangelize despite the conditions, and Timothy needs to have the tools to endure those circumstances
Our spiritual heritage strengthens us in difficult times
“What is going to happen to these churches/my church?”

When we think of what others endured, we can find strength to face our circumstances
Our spiritual heritage encourages us to take up the work of passing on the faith
Just like Timothy, it’s easy and even a mantra to keep faith private; however, that’s not what our spiritual parents, grandparents, etc. gave their lives to do
The passing on of faith is the great challenge of every generation; but we don’t do it alone
Write out your spiritual heritage; look at all of those who have given time, talent, and treasure so that you could be strong in the faith and endure hardship when the world opposes Christ in you
