Good evening brothers and sisters. We are here tonight to celebrate a momentous occasion. We will be ordaining these three brothers. We thank God for the call that is on their lives, and we know that this is just the beginning of what God has in store for them. Turn with me in your Bibles to . We will be reading verses 1-5. It reads, “I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word, be ready in season and out of season, reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with all patience and teaching. For the time will come when people will not endure sound doctrine, but they will gather to themselves teachers in accordance with their own desires, having itching ears, and they will turn their ears away from the truth and turn to myths. But be self-controlled in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, and prove your ministry.“ The title of my message this afternoon is, “But You… Preach the Word.”
The book of 2 Timothy is listed among the books scholars call the Pastorals, which include 1 & 2, Timothy and Titus. They are called that because they were written to Pastors of churches. Timothy and Titus were both proteges of the Apostle Paul. 2 Timothy is an extraordinary book. Although it appears in our Bibles before Titus, 2 Timothy is Paul’s final letter. Paul was imprisoned. Though he had been in this situation many times before, he knew this time he would not make it out alive. When we read 2 Timothy, we are reading Paul’s final instructions. Imagine if you knew the exact date and time of your death. What would you say? Who would you reach out to? A person’s last words tend to b
of your death. What would you say? Who would you reach out to? A person’s last words tend to be remembered.
