Introduction

In our first reading people are tired of waiting on Mosses, is he dead, they make a golden calve and worship it as the god who brought them out of Egypt. In our Gospel the Pharisees and Scribes are complaining about Jesus welcoming sinner and eating with them. And two brothers sons of a wonderful loving father are mistreating him the younger can’t wait for the father to die, wants his inheritance now, and after squandering it, poor naked and hungry returns home begging, and the Older son is not entering the house celebration of his brothers return, blaming the father for being unjust. And in the parable of the Shepherd in the Gospel leaving the 99 sheep in the desert to go and find the one lost sheep, we question what kind of a shepherd would do that!?

Body

People often misunderstand God, and miss out on having that wonderful fulfilling secure relationship God wants to have with them. A relationship based on love and trust, peace and rest. Instead we get drawn more and more into the world system with its own values and competitive ways, acquiring more possessions, positions of power and influence, nothing wrong with possessions, position and influences, but is it worth it at the expense of being alienated from Jesus, and each other? families not finding time to rest together and worship God together even on Sundays! The values and demands of this world become of greater importance and priority, than Jesus present in the Eucharist, we start becoming more like the people in our readings, impatient, critical and demanding.

Conclusion

Have we lost sight that the Shepherd who leaves the 99 to find that one lost sheep to carry it back on his shoulders, is you and me, the person at your left and right, and one of the 99. You say I am a Catholic, Protestant, name your Religion, None, Atheist, have doubts, you’re in Artists and Science, a Politician, name your brand, network media talking head, in Business, CEO, CFO, (LGBTQ Straight, don’t know, leave out for 9 AM Mass) down and out sick and tired, no where to go, the younger, the older, sisters and brother! The Shepherd is looking to carry you on his shoulders today?. This Shepherded is merciful, patient and kind, he knows, all your pains and sorrows, fears and insecurities, he knows why you are running, if you let him carry you back, he talks to you, tells you how much he loves you and how precious you are to him, how much he want to give you everything you need, be your friend, then when he puts you back down from his shoulders you will be in peace, resting safe and secure with the rest of the 99. The Shepherd is looking to carry you on his shoulders today, will you let him?
We don’t know if the older son in entered the house joining the celebration, but we have entered this banquet on behalf of all the 99 and the One still missing, to feast with the father on the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, This Shephard The Lord Jesus Christ his Son, to hear the Father whisper in your hearts, my son my daughter stay with me here always, everything I have is yours.!
