BIBLE

Church word - I’m not sure what you think of when you hear this word. Is it good? Bad? confused? Bored?
If you don’t know anything about the Bible, you probably know that it’s a book, it’s the church book. But you might have some questions about the Bible. That is so good!
Here is a short video that will help fill you in a bit.
play “The Book” video
So the bible is not one book, it is 66 books! Varying size, varying genre, varying era. All can be connected to the story of God at work in the creating and saving mankind.
So there is some info on what the Bible is. But why should we care about the Bible? I have several answers for that. I’ll just say

The Bible is God’s word

I need to be careful here. This statement could be another “church phrase” that people like me say without ever explaining. What do we mean when we say the Bible is God’s word?
The bible contains the message God wants his followers/the world to receive!
Sometimes the bible does directly quote God’s words when he speaks. But probably the majority of the Bible isn’t God speaking, so how is it “God’s word”?
2 Timothy 3:16 NIV
16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,
The Bible/Scripture is “God-breathed”. The word for spirit and breath are so similar they often mean the same things. This specific word for “God-breathed” has both the words ‘God’ and ‘spirit’ in it. This mean’s the Holy Spirit led/directed the creation of the bible. God inspired/directed/led human authors to write for one reason or another. God didn’t control them while they wrote, but he was the one who gave them the words/experiences/opportunities/guidance.
God used human words to craft his WORD to the world. Let’s look at this passage again:
2 Timothy 3:16–17 ESV
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
If the Bible is God’s word, why does that matter? What’s it for? Is it supposed to be like kept safe, or protected?
The Bible has a purpose - to help everyone become a mature Christian. God didn’t just give it to us to admire as literature or preserve in a museum. We have it so we can use it! We need to apply it to their lives!
Hebrews 4:12 ESV
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

The Bible is God’s word for you!

We need this word in our lives! It’s not an old book, that we study to feel smart, sophisticated, etc.
We should care about the Bible because it speaks about us, the people we know, the world we live in, and the direction we’re all headed. (if something was written about you, wouldn’t you want to read it?).
John 20:31 ESV
31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
The Bible is God’s word for YOU!
