2 Reasons Jesus Finds Himself Alone

Betrayed by an Enemy

Jesus loved Judas even though Judas rejects him

Judas was protected by Jesus-Jesus only had to reveal to those in the room what Judas was about to do and they would have ended it there.

Peter- pulling sword at Jesus’ arrest.

Jesus was “anguished’ because of Judas’ decision- not for what it would do to him but for what it had done to Judas.

Judas heard same Gospel as other disciples.

Judas heard Jesus’ teachings against money and covetousness.

Jesus even washed his feet.

Judas’ heart was hard- he didn’t receive Jesus’ words as truth.

APP= Genuine love for someone wanting to do you in.

Jesus showed him grace and mercy to the end- Judas sat in the seat of honor, next to Jesus.

Jesus serves him, a sign of respect and honor.

Being sincerely nice to someone betraying you makes them mad.

If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink, for you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you.

Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you came to do.”

Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him.

Offering of bread was Jesus’ final offer of love to Judas.

Jesus gives him the opportunity to make a final decision before it was too late.

Judas’ response to Jesus- allowing Satan to enter.

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man.

God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

But there comes a time when the opportunity for repentance ends.

And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, 

Hard Heart

“it was night”= Jesus was light.

What was happening was about those who hate the light.

Denied by a Friend

Denied= disowned

Reasons Peter Failed

Over-zealous-- not right timing but good attitude.

This is Peter’s default position- run without thinking.

We can’t think we are more important than we are.

Jesus can do it without us.

He chooses to use us.

But only in his timing.

Over-confident-- didn’t realize how much he needed Jesus.

Thought of himself as the hero.

Jesus is the only hero in this story.

Only he could die for the sins of the world

Peter would get to follow Jesus to death.

But only after being humbled.

One day Peter would get to follow Jesus.

Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19 (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.)

And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”

Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have.

13 I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder, 14 since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.

15 And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.

Good intentions but wrong timing.

Good intentions can still be outside of God’s will.

There will not be light until you have denied 3 times.

Judas and Peter both had a reference to time of day.

Peter was influenced by the darkness but light was coming.

You may find yourself in the darkness, maybe because of your own mistakes.

But morning is coming.

Judas never came back to the light.

Peter endured his bad decision and came back to the light.

- as day was breaking- begins scene of Jesus and Peter dialoguing about Peter’s love for Jesus.

CONCLUSION

Will you stop the lonely journey and come to the Light of Jesus?
