Paul’s writing in this letter flows well from one thought to another, and he frequently anticipates the readers question.
Chapter 6 starts with the question What shall we say then?
In order for us to understand the full scope and purpose of Paul’s question here let’s review his arguments up to this point.
In the second half of Chapter1, and into continuing into chapter 3, Paul made the argument that we are all born under sin.
Jews and Gentiles alike, all of us are all sinners.
Next, Paul argued that doing good does not save us.
We are not saved by our good works, rather we are saved on the basis of Christ’s righteousness.
We are saved by grace through our faith in Jesus Christ.
Then, in Chapter 5 Paul argues for assurance in our salvation.
If you have followed the arguments carefully, you may come to this bottom line.
You are saved, not by your works, but by faith alone in Christ alone.
That is the gospel, the good news.
Not only that but you can be assured that since God has saved you will have life eternal.
This is too much for some people.
Salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone usually brings some objections.
If anyone has been quiet up to this point, they are about to jump out of their seats, as Paul writes verses 20 and 21.
The objection is this-Wait one minute- If my works do not matter, and in fact- if grace increases where sin increases why can’t I just go on sinning?
My works don’t contribute to my salvation, God brings those saves to eternal life, not only that but the more sin there is the more grace there is.
I might as well sin.
The gospel seems like easy grace, or cheap grace as the phrase goes.
Believe in Jesus, sin all you want you will still be saved.
It is quite common today.
Often Christians do not behave differently from the rest of the world.
Christian get drunk, or engage in adultery.
The divorce rate is similar.
The churches often do not reach out to the poor.
Come to Christ, say the prayer, no change necessary you can look just the rest of the world and go on.
That is a common heresy it is called antinomianism. It means against the law.
No more law.
Look I profess Christ, right I’m saved, I can do anything I want.
Whenever the true Gospel is accurately preached, salvation by grace alone through faith alone this objection will come up.
Preacher that is easy believism, cheap grace.
Especially when it comes to assurance.
You can’t teach that pastor-people will just start sinning.
Paul anticipates that.
That is why we have Romans 6.1.
Can we keep sinning?
Is that what this means we can keep on sinning?
By no means Paul exclaims.
But that is not quite strong enough, some translations say God forbid!
It is the strongest negative you can come across.
GOD FORBID!
If you think the gospel is a license to sin?
If you think that precious sacrifice of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is a license you do not understand the gospel.
In the gospel, by our faith in the righteousness of Jesus Christ- we are united with Christ, is one way to say it.
It is like being united in marriage, to someone you love.
Before you were in Christ, you were his enemy, but now, after the Holy Spirit changes your heart, you love Christ,
Here is a very elementary illustration, please don’t carry this too far, just take the basics at face value.
A man marries a woman he loves.
He has opportunities, and perhaps even temptations for an affair, but since he loves his wife, he does not have affair.
Another way to say it is it is like we are born again.
From our first reading in John 3. We have a new life.
Our old life in sin has died.
We have a new life in Christ and our old sin life is dead.
We died to sin, We do not live in sin any longer.
We dot continue living in sin.
We were once in Adam, in sin, but that self dies, now we are alive in Christ,
This raises at least two questions.
Question 1
For one, as we become Christians does this mean we just magically stop sinning?
No-We still struggle with sin.
Before being in Christ our questions were how much can I sin and still go to heaven?
How much sin can I get away with and still be a christian?
We would look at other people and point out there sin and ask can they be a Christian?
But now we are in Christ we don;t ask those questions.
Instead, we grieve our sin.
Others sins cause us to grieve.
We do not want to sin, we want to obey Christ.
We attempt not to sin, We aim for being Christ-like, we try and grow in holiness.
When we do sin, we ask for forgiveness, we attempt to try harder next time we ask for help.
But we know we are still saved by grace alone, by faith alone.
We are still justified not by out failed righteousness but by the perfect flawless righteousness of our Lord Jesus.
I have a warning for you.
Sometimes Satan the accuser will try to tell hat you are not good enough to be saved, or that Christ will abandon you.
Christ died for you-do not let that fact go.
He died for you, you are precious in His sight, you are not saved because you are righteous, but because Christ is righteous.
Question 2-
But what if you struggle, what if you are at a point that sin seems to have a tight hold on you how do you go about shaking that sin that binds you?
Let me revisit the opening story for a minute.
The woman in our story kept the ashes of her dead husband with her.
Of course she was going to be reminded of him, and it was difficult for her to move on.
If you keep an urn filled with the ashes of your dead life in your house you are never going to bury your old self.
Stop living with ties to your old life.
If your chosen sin is pornography, you can’t hang around the computer.
