Focus verse:
“It is finished” = Tetelestai (te te less sty) [te as is telescope]
This word was used in the marketplace.
When you purchased something and paid for it, the merchant would write you a a receipt and put the word “Tetelestai” on there, which meant, “paid in full”.
When Jesus said “Tetelestai” on the cross, Jesus declared that His death was the full payment for your sins.
Justification
In a court case, the judge will ask the defendant, “how do you please?”
The defendant will either say “I plead guilty” or “I plead not guilty”.
But we don’t plead guilt or not guilty, we plead the blood of Jesus!
When we do that, we are legally acquitted of all wrong doing (that’s what “justify” means)
The devil can’t bring a charge against us or condemn us.
But not only that… the blood of Jesus also gives us...
Purification
We are not only legally acquitted, we are also cleansed of the stain of sin...
Because thsoe sacrifices could not truly take away sin, they had to live with “conciousness of sins”.
But...
We shouldn’t be walking around with “sin-conciousness”.
Instead, we should be living with “righteousness-conciousness”:
So blood justifies us, and cleanses us.
It also gives us...
Protection
When the Israelites were in bondage in Egypt, God told them to kill a lamb and put the blood on the lintel and doorposts of their home, because He was going to pass through and kill the firstborn...
This is why it is called Passover.
But notice something… “the destroyer”.
God Himself didn’t kill the firstborn of the Egyptians.
In the Bible, when it says God does something, it can mean He does it directly, or that He allows it to happen.
Here is meant that He would allow this being called “the destroyer” to kill them and would prevent him from touching the Israelites when He saw the blood!
This being is mentioned again in 1 Corinthians 10:10
Jesus is our Passover Lamb:
The destroyer mentioned in these passages is probably an angel.
But...
We have an enemy who wants to destroy us, but the blood of Jesus gives us victory over him!
Today, we are observing Holy Communion.
It is important to note that when the Passover happened, not only did the Israelites have to apply the blood of the lamb to their doorposts and lintels, they also had to partake of the lamb itself...
The Jews were to commemorate this event each year, by observing the festival of Passover, in which they would eat the Passover lamb.
Even so, before Jesus went to the cross, when He was celebrating Passover with His disciples, He introduced a new sacriment that His followers were to observe, namely the Lord’s Supper:
This we will do now, but before we do, it is important that we examine ourselves...
Holy Communion
Prayer, blessing the items and thanking God for the justificaiton, purification and protection of the blood of Jesus...
