Two enemies of Grace: Legalism and Perfectionism
Today we want to look at Grace that sets us free.
Galatians 3:3 NLT
3 How foolish can you be? After starting your new lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort?

Perfectionism- trying to prove my worth by being perfect.

No perfect person except Jesus, but we keep trying...

How Perfectionism harms us.

Perfectionism defeats my initiative.

Ecclesiastes 11:4 NLT
4 Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest.
Ecclesiastes 11:4 The Living Bible
4 If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done.
We have all wanted to do something but held off because either the time wasn’t right, we didn’t think the project was ready… something wasn’t perfect so we waited and we never got it done. email that had to be worded perfect…

Perfectionism damages my relationships.

Proverbs 17:9 CEV
9 You will keep your friends if you forgive them, but you will lose your friends if you keep talking about what they did wrong.
How many of you enjoy being around people who are always correction you? and they go on and on…
Perfectionism causes us to look at the wrong things and is rooted in insecurity. Perfectionists are hard on themselves and others. Because of this they are a pain and they damage relationships.

Perfectionism destroys my happiness.

Ecclesiastes 7:16 NLT
16 So don’t be too good or too wise! Why destroy yourself?
He is not talking about genuine right living. Your ideal will always fight with reality. We are never good enough and that feeling will drive you into perfectionism.
Too many people put that perfectionism voice on God, but God doesn’t nag… it doesn’t work on others or ourselves.
The antidote is to relax in God’s Grace.

How to Break Free from the Performance Trap… RELAX in God’s Grace

Realize nobody is perfect.

Psalm 119:96 CEV
96 Nothing is completely perfect, except your teachings.
Only God and His Word are perfect and thats what wee need to base our lives on.
Ecclesiastes 7:20 TEV
20 There is no one on earth who does what is right all the time and never makes a mistake.
Used to be a philosophy… I’m ok and you are ok. The truth is I am not ok and you are not ok but because of God’s Grace in our lives, that’s ok. God wants us to grow and to do great things for him but he is not waiting on you or I to be perfect or good enough. David, Peter, Paul, none were good enough.

Enjoy God’s unconditional love.

1 John 3:1 NLT
1 See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him.
We are God’s Children.... not his servants.
Romans 8:31 NLT
31 What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?
Grace = God is on our side. God loves us unconditionally. We are programmed to love conditionally, but that’s not how God loves.

Let God handle things.

1 Peter 5:7 NLT
7 Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.
We need to do what we can do and let God handle the rest. God can handle all the uncontrollable things in our lives. The perfectionism in us tries to handle everything. We havre to let go...
Proverbs 14:30 The Living Bible
30 A relaxed attitude lengthens a man’s life; jealousy rots it away.
Things don’t have to be perfect for you to be happy. There is no perfect family… vacation… job… kids… husband… wife…

Act in faith not in fear.

Ephesians 2:8 NIV
8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—
Grace through faith is how we are saved and how we stay saved. It’s a gift.
Colossians 2:6 NLT
6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him.
We continue to live by faith. Everything God gives us is because of His grace. None of us deserve anything from him.
You can live in the prison of perfectionism and legalism or you can...

Exchange my perfectionism for God’s peace.

Matthew 11:28–29 The Message
28 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. 29 Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.
Perfectionism destroys peace. There is none of us that can measure up to God’s glorious standard… that’s why Jesus came. He is perfect.
Hebrews 12:15 NLT
15 Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.
Come receive God’s Grace!
