1 Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret;
2 and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets.
3 And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down and began teaching the people from the boat.
4 When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.”
5 Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.”
6 When they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break;
7 so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink.
8 But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!”
9 For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken;
10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men.”
11 When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.

The Book of Luke
Who wrote this book? Luke, a man of culture who wanted to express the love of Christ.
When was it written? Most agree the early date of 63AD
Why was it written?
If you don’t believe the central tenant of the entire Bible: “God so love the world that He gave His only Son (to come to earth as a man, live, teach and die a substitutionary death for the sins of all, be buried and resurrected on the 3rd day) so that all who believe should not perish but have everlasting life. If you don’t believe this, then nothing else will make sense in this book. Please keep reading it but it will be out of context.
1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, 3 it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus;

THE CROWDS
Jesus continues to show his mastery of the word of God, in such a way people want to hear what He has to say.
I find it odd here that the fishermen were not a part of the crowd but were cleaning their nets.
Progressive nature of calling: The disciples were not some very in tune with their feelings, emotional guys who were looking for their big break to make it in the world of religion. They were fishermen, sailors, hard men with a tough job.
This was not the first interaction Jesus had with them, was the first calling. Glad they didn’t sell all their stuff and just show up at Jesus’ place one day and say we are ready…Pastor Bonds.

THE CATCH
Jesus demonstrates miraculous power over nature.
Imagine a carpenter, who just finished his side job as a professor, telling seasoned professional fishermen “I got this”.
There is some level of trust in the relationship b/c Peter says but I will do as You say.
Concept: would anyone lie to make themselves look bad? This is another example of a small thing that shows the Bible is real. Why even write into the story (if you are making it up) that there was any doubt. Wouldn’t you make yourself look good and write “and we obeyed immediately, knowing Jesus commanded all living things.”
According to the Coast Guard boat calculator, a boat this size can hold 13 adults @ 150lbs each = 1950 lbs. If each boat had 3 people that would be roughly 3000 lbs of fish...

THE CALL
Jesus took a normal daily action and turned it into a miracle. It isn’t like two giant whales beached themselves and called out to the fishermen to come and get them…this was normal, fishing, in an abnormal quantity. It rocked their world.
The word used in v.9 “catch” means “the act of catching something, to put something in a net”
The word used in v.10 “catching” means “to bring under control and to continue to restrain, to hold in check” DISCIPLESHIP at its core.
Like I said in the beginning, if you don’t believe the central theme of the Bible everything else will make much less sense. This is where the application of today’s message begins. You see, if you don’t believe the central theme then this book becomes at best a buffet of self-help prescriptions for what ails you.
