A Sabbath Remains

Opening Prayer: Matthew 6:9-13 “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we
also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” –Amen
RECAP previous two weeks of Jesus in conflict: Forgiveness, Eating with Sinners, Fasting – Sabbath
Read through the Text and observations
1. Jesus doesn’t disagree with them. Torah (Gods word) and the M ishna (extra jewish laws)Fence
a. Gen 2:1 Torah-Snacking – Don’t walk more the ¼ mile=Mishna, unscrew the fridge lightbulb,
automatic elevators so you don’t push the button etc.
2. Jesus goes to the Word of God not the added pharisaical rules. 1 Sam 21:1-6
a. apparent contradiction – Abiathar the high priest VS Ahimelech who David dealt with
i. Were Berean’s – Acts 17:11 Rightly handling the word of truth 2 Tim 2:15
ii. Remember chapter divisions were added later. this is how they would call out a
passage.
iii. BE EXCITED not dismayed – when scripture is hard or seeming problematic –Pray,
Read context, use helps from books or people,
iv. ANSWER - Chapter divisions were introduced into bible printing in 1227, verse 1551
Geneva bible in 1560
v. Gods word is infallible in its original manuscripts - have confidence DON’T stop until
God reveals to you his heart and answer. He’s there so the answer is there too.
3. Cause of the Withered Hand is unknown v1-2– Cause of the problem is known – might accuse him!
HARD HARTS
4. Rhetorical questions V4… do good? heal or kill?
5. M oving to the heart of the passage –
a. ITS MADE! V27 The Sabbath was made for man .. Its good Jesus says. Not man for the
Sabbath… what their doing it bad
b. WHAT IS JESUS SAYING TO THE ORIGNIAL AUDIENCE? we’re too liberal loose in our
culture on the Sabbath and religious practice – Completely opposite contexts – So we can’t
just take it and immediately apply it we have to view it to the original context and then see
how that applies to ours.
i. Jesus is not throwing out the Sabbath. He is removing the barriers to it, the problems
and muck around it. He is revealing its true purpose and heart.
ii. He is angry at the OVER THE TOP religious Pharisees and their “laws”
iii. WE then must look at from JESUS heart and say, we need to be changed back to the
heart of the Sabbath as well, Not less religious but more intentional
6. TRANSITION INTO GEN 2 by Legalism! Were so unaccustomed to this practice in society now that
our tendency to say to someone saying set aside a day is “don’t be legalistic!” That leads me to
the second point:
7. Gen 1 and 2:1 Creation and the Sabbath rest of God!
a. Its HOLY – regular and intentional
i. Set apart- Year correlates to the Earth and sun, Month Moon and earth, Day rotation
of the earth, Week? Gods institution of its cycle for rest.
ii. The heart of God is to provide regular weekly rest to his people, does that work on
one particular day? does it work as a regular time of day? Can we just start with a
half day? Sunday afternoon?
iii. IT’S A CHOICE - Romans 14:5-6 One esteems one day above another, another
esteems every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.
8. TRANSITION BY “W E’RE ALL A LITTLE DIFFERENT!”

a. IT BLESSED – Physical, Mental and Emotional
i. Dictionary describes the word blessed as simply meaning “Made Happy”
1. it’s a happy day – Joy, enjoyment – ¿¿¿SING??? watch fight and pray
2. it’s a party day
ii. Life Giving vs. Soul Sucking
iii. Running for rest, napping for rest, Jesus wore robes – do you have a bath robe?
maybe bicycle shorts
1. Physical rest, Mental Rest from work, Emotional rest, Spiritual rest – Orthodox
Jews don’t do intercessory prayer. 3500 years on this because it hard work.
2. PSALM 127 God Gives his beloved sleep – its our opportunity to let the
sovereignty of God play out in our lives
3. Put down the iphone plow.
4. Let work go. Maybe that means an unhealthy deadline might need to be
missed and our self believed abilites might need to be adjusted a bit.
5. Before light bulbs the average person slept 10+ hours a night – 4am prayer
time is a whole lot easier when you go to sleep at 6pm.
6. LET THE DAY/TIME BE HAPPY!
b. Its in JESUS – Spiritual – THE DIVIDING LINE BETWEEN CHRISTIAN AND SECULAR
i. Anyone without Jesus can do all the above. Jews have been doing it for 3500 years.
Jesus is what makes all the difference.
ii. John chapter 1 In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the
Word was God, the same was in the beginning with God. All things were made
through him and without him was not anything made that was made
iii. Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath Ch 2:27
iv. Gen 1 and 2:1 The Very CLIMAX of Creation is the Sabbath rest of God!
v. Mark 3:6 They are seeking to kill the very fulfillment of their desire.
1. Hebrews 4:1-16
a. Strive to ENTER V11
b. The Word V12
c. Prayer v14-16
9. The Sabbath is not an addition to the work week. This is not an encouragement to ADD MORE TO
YOUR PLATE MOMS, This is not another TASK TO BE COMPLETED DADS. This is not another
ITEM ON THE TO-DO-LIST KIDS. The Sabbath encouragement this week from scripture is to carve
out and remove from your body, remove from your mind, remove from your work, remove from you
list and to REST in JESUS. Through the finished work of JESUS on the cross we have been given
this great and marvelous access to the very fulfillment of the GOD CREATED desire to rest. In GOD
ALMIGHTY in his GLORIOUS ALMIGHT SON we have TRUE rest.
COMMUNION: We started with the LORDS Prayer. “give us this day our daily bread, forgive us our debts
as we forgive our debtors”
Daily bread is work and physical provision and prayer for social economic blessing it is also
speaking
Jesus body as the true bread – he tells us in John 6:48-56
Jesus blood is the forgiveness in the prayer
BENEDICTION:
As we have spent the time in speaking of REST:
Psalm 115:12-15 - The LORD has remembered us he will bless us.

FAMILY TABLE TALK
As a family, process through the biblical theology of the Sabbath from Gen 1 to Revelation and see how
the 7th day of the week (Saturday) transitions to the 1st day of the week (Sunday)
1. Gen 1-2:3 “And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the
seventh day from all his work that he had done.”
2. Exodus 20:3-17 “Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy…”
3. Isaiah 58:13-14 “If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath…”
4. Matt 28:1, Mark 16:1, Luke 24:1 John 20:1, 19… First day of the week
5. Acts 2 The day of Pentacost is Easter +49 days
6. Acts 20:17, 1 Cor 16:1
7. Rev 1:10 – The Lords day
HUSBANDS AND WIVES:
1) Discuss what makes each member of the family feel happy and refreshed personally – Maybe write
them down to remember…
2) Work out a day this week that each member of the family can rest in joyfulness.
3) Encourage each other in your personal prayer and “listening to Jesus” in the bible.
4) Contemplate the ability to practice a Sabbath every week for the rest of your life – Non religious!
