John 6:48–59 ESV
I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.
John
Jesus Offers
His body and blood
-Jesus is not just talking about a concept or an analogy. He is teaching about His death on the cross.
b. Eternal Life
-If we eat and drink of Christ, we will live eternally
Matthew 5:6 ESV
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
c. Satisfaction
-He has fulfilled the sacrificial law
-Satisfaction in Christ, regardless of circumstances
Philippians 11:
Philippians 4:11–13 ESV
Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
2. The People Respond
a. With grumbling and disputing
-instead of seeking clarity form Christ, they fought amongst themselves
b. Longed for the temporary
John 6:31 ESV
Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”
-Mana was temporary and needed everyday. Instead of embracing the eternal, they idolized the temporary
-The mana in the wilderness pointed people to God and His providence.
3. How Will You Respond?
a. With Faith
-It is o.k. to question God, but we have to be careful how we go about it.
-Questions should draw us to God for answers, not away from Him.
b. Or Rejection
-There are somethings we cannot prove about God.
-Will you have faith to still accept him or do those things cause you to doubt him.
Mark 9:23–25 ESV
And Jesus said to him, “ ‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”
Matthew 17:20 ESV
He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”
