Is it ever hard to love people?

Love Your Enemies

44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven.
For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have?
Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
47 And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others?
Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Think for about a time it was hard not to get revenge on somebody or maybe you did take revenge on somebody for something and you regret that.

It’s hard not to retaliate.
It’s hard to love those who do bad things to you
God calls us to not retaliate and to even love those who do bad things to us

A misused law
The original intent of the law was fairness
It kept people from paying a greater price than they deserved
It also prevented people from taking personal revenge
People perverted the law to make it their own.
It was turned into basically a revenge (You take my eye, i’m going to take your eyes)
Unfortunately, this law was misconstrued over 100’s of years

A New Attitude
Jesus isn’t replacing an old law with a new law, he is trying to change their attitudes
Read v. 40-42 again
Be willing to suffer loss rather than cause someone to suffer (whoa…)
Do we do this?
I KNOW I DON’T
everything is about me
I want to make sure i’m comfortable
Retaliation only leads to a settled war…not peace
It only makes the retaliator and offender feel worse
A New Directive
Turn the other cheek—don’t seek vengeance
This demands faith and love
It means that we will be hurt
Strong men can love people and suffer hurt
Weak men think only of themselves, hurt people, then run away to protect themselves.
Give him your cloak&Helpthe one who begs from you—We should try to help the sinner
When we help, he may try to attack us again
BUt we are victorious because Jesus is on our side
Helping us and building our characaters

Jesus takes it even further.

My responsiblity wasn’t to get mad at him or question it or complain, but to do it to the best of my ability.
God calls us to a new directive of going the distance.
