Ephesians 4:29 NASB95
29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.

I. What Grieves the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 4:30 NASB95
30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
(v.30) The Word “Grieve” is in the imperative mood. This tells us that Paul is heating up a little bit. The Imperative mood is a command, not a suggestion. Paul in these last verses is not looking for the readers opinion or feedback, it is not up for discussion. We can surmise that this is end of an persuasive argument that Paul has made in Chapter 4. Paul’s concern is our interpersonal relationships within the body. And these verses formulate his conclusion. From (v.25-32) Paul uses 9 imperative verbs. Paul is ending this chapter with 11 commands. He is firing them off like bullets.
(v.30) “Do not grieve” Imperative verbs usually start with “Do not” in the English language this phraseology conveys a command of some sort.
(v.30) That word “Grieve” means:
a. Grieve: to cause on to become sad, to bring deep distress to someone. An offense against a fellow believer is an offense agaist the Holy Spirit.
-This is statement is connected to (v.29)

(v.30) “Do not grieve” This is very strong language. Let’s put this together. Paul commands the believer to stop using rotten, and stanky, putrifying words with each because to cause the HS to become “grieve, sad, and distressed” Honestly speaking:
Who in hear wants to cause the HS to be distressed and sorrowful?
-Don’t tell me you love God if it does not bother you to bring “Distress & Grief” to the HS all because you can’t keep that Mouth under control.

-This language as it pertains to the HS tells us some things about the Third Person of the Trinity:
a. He has personhood----he is not a force, or energy. Only persons can fell grief…(Jehovah Witness website)
The holy spirit is God’s power in action, his active force. (;:​35) God sends out his spirit by projecting his energy to any place to accomplish his will....JW.org website
b. His emotions and feelings are aligned with what makes The First Person of the Trinity angry; They are absolutely on one accord.
c. When we live in sin as believers the HS first emotion is grief, not anger. (Unresolved grief can lead to anger)
1. I think because we are his children and he knows that we are much better than our actions sometimes, and that makes him made. Like the coach who gets grieve with his star QB who does not play to his potential. Analogy: Like the Father who hears the news that his son was arrested for DUI. Then he comes to bail his son out his first emotion is often extreme disappointment, grief.

Isaiah 63:9–10 NASB95
9 In all their affliction He was afflicted, And the angel of His presence saved them; In His love and in His mercy He redeemed them, And He lifted them and carried them all the days of old. 10 But they rebelled And grieved His Holy Spirit; Therefore He turned Himself to become their enemy, He fought against them.
(v.9) In this verse Isaiah is talking about Yahweh coming to rescue the Children of Israel from Egypt and then caring for them like a Lioness takes care of her cubs. Then look at how they treated him as a “Thank You”
(v.10) It says But they rebelled. They looked at all he had done and they turn their back on him. Notice what this act did “And grieved his HS” You can see from this OT reference that the HS first response is “Grief” then look what his “Grief” moves too “Anger” He move deep distress too “Anger”
What can we surmise by these verses?
-Be quick to clean up your mouth and repent because the HS can quickly move from grief to anger. Yall remeber when would says “You better clean those dishes right, because if I have to come in there and do them its going to be a problem” She was giving us an opportunity to correct the problem on our own before intervention was necessary.

(v.30) “30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.’ Notice the usage of this very formal title. Paul wants us to mediate just while before we skip to the next verse let me take you on a scriptural journey:

Summary: The person who Isaiah is talking about will come from Jesse who is of the tribe of Judah. He will be totally under the rule and auspices of the HS. He will be a spirit controlled individual. Tell who you think this individual is based on this OT description??
-The HS has a history long before the NT started his unseen hand print has been moving since the beginning of time itself.
-Can you even comprehend that this individual person who was hovering over the creation itself and bringing order is living inside of us teaching us right from wrong, leading us besides the still waters, encouraging us when we feel like quitting, and kicking us when we get outside of Gods’ will has taken up residence in our house. Not outside of our house like a stranger, but inside our house like an honored guest or family member.

(v.30) Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. This HS precedes from God. He is God of very God he is not a substitute teacher. He is also the one that guarantees your salvation. He is the glue the keeps you in God. He is the downpayment for your lay away plan.
Let me reiterate for Paul:
“DO NOT GRIEVE THE HS OF GOD”

31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.
-Paul is still lingering on the command given in (v.29) pertaining to Rotten Speech:
-(v.31) He starts off with a command “Let All” meaning don’t leave any of these off the list, it is not good enough to get rid of anger, but to still slander folks. This first phrase could be render “let all manner of _______!” This is for the folks who like to say things like “I forgive you but I am not going to forget it” Paul is saying dig it all out don’t leave anything left in the ground from these Character traits. Let’s take a look at these character traits:
a. Bitterness---pikria---resentfulness, harshness, virulence--
One day, two monks were walking through the countryside. They were on their way to another village to help bring in the crops. As they walked, they spied an old woman sitting at the edge of a river. She was upset because there was no bridge, and she could not get across on her own. The first monk kindly offered, "We will carry you across if you would like."  "Thank you," she said gratefully, accepting their help.  So the two men joined hands, lifted her between them and carried her across the river. When they got to the other side, they set her down, and she went on her way.
After they had walked another mile or so, the second monk began to complain. "Look at my clothes," he said. "They are filthy from carrying that woman across the river. And my back still hurts from lifting her. I can feel it getting stiff." The first monk just smiled and nodded his head.
A few more miles up the road, the second monk griped again, "My back is hurting me so badly, and it is all because we had to carry that silly woman across the river! I cannot go any farther because of the pain." The first monk looked down at his partner, now lying on the ground, moaning. "Have you wondered why I am not complaining?" he asked. "Your back hurts because you are still carrying the woman. But I set her down five miles ago."
That is what many of us are like in dealing with our families. We are that second monk who cannot let go. We hold the pain of the past over our loved ones' heads like a club, or we remind them every once in a while, when we want to get the upper hand, of the burden we still carry because of something they did years ago.

b. wrath—thumos—boiling anger---this was prohibited in (v.26) That text does not prohibit “Anger” it prohibits boiling anger.
c. anger---orge—now this is a little confusing but I think we can work through this. You will recognize that Paul says Let go “all anger”. But in (v.26) “be angry” Is Paul a little confused. There is a simple explanation. In (v.26) Anger is in the passive meaning the anger was not caused by oneself. This is what we would call “Righteous Anger” the anger that comes from being legitimately wronged or offended. Paul in (v.26) is saying it is natural to mad about “Your child being bullied and beat up at school, or your daughter being sexually assaulted” but even in those cases don’t let that anger boil up. Eventually even in legitimate cause you need to give your anger to God.....This word in this list is referencing not legitimate anger, but illegitimate anger(This is the bad tempered person).
d. Clamor(Brawling)—This is the end result of un-dealt with anger(bad temper)
e. Slander—injurious speech(usually lies)-making a false statement that is damaging to a person reputation.
f. Malice—ill will or a desire to injury---This is characteristics of someone who enjoys hurting others emotionally.

(v.31) “put away from you” Paul says put all of these away from you.
Ephesians 4:32 NASB95
32 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.

(v.32) Paul in the previous verses tell us to “Put off” meaning remove, or let go of all of those “rotten & Putrid” things that have come out of our mouths. Then in verse (v.32) he tell us what to “Put on” notice the text:
(v.32) “Be”ginomai “to become” “this carries the idea of abandoning one’s mental condition and make their way, beginning there and then into its opposite. It is a change of mind, and it has to be intentional this will not happen on its own.

II. What pleases the Holy Spirit

32 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.
(v.32) “Be kind”“benevolent, gracious, kind as opposed to “harsh, hard, bitter, and sharp” Our new garments are to be the garments of “kindness” Now let’s put these first two words together based on their definition: “We are to have a change of mind and instead of harshness, bitterness and sharpness we are to become “kind” I don’t normally do this, but sometimes we need examples in our body of what this “kindness” looks like: Sister Caroline Pierson, & Brother Mike Green. I want to stress that Kindness is more than just being sweet & nice. Kindness is an intentional decision to not allow the “rotten, putrid, and funky” ways that we treat each other in the body to effect us.

(v.32) “Be kind to one another” Paul then tell us where this kindness is to be expressed. It is to be expressed in our interpersonal relationship with those that are closest to us. Your kindness does not count if it is not displayed and throughout the body “I know I am a kind person” and everyone else says “I can’t tell”. Kindness is not a personal character trait it is visible, because it come out most vividly when choose to be this way in spite of how we are treated.
(v.32) “Be kind to one another, tender-hearted” We have to define our terms biblically:
What does it mean to be tender-hearted?
-The word means Compassionate now lets define Compassionate; to show concern and sympathy for others.
-If you notice all things that we are supposed to “put off” are very selfish emotions. Bitterness, Wrath, Anger, Brawling, and Slander. Compassion is the direct opposite of these. Compassion always thinks about the other person.

(v.32) “Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.” there are two words usually used for “forgive”
a. Aphimi-to put away. most normally used when it refers to Jesus bearing our sins on the cross paying the penalty for our sins, and satisfying the just demands of his Law
b. Charizomai-to do favor to, do something agreeable or pleasant to one, to show one’s self graciously. Analogy: Sometimes when Our girls did wrong and expected to be punished I would just forgive them and not punish them. My intent in doing that was to help them understand “Grace & Favor”
(v.32) In this text the word “Charizomai” is used so in forgiving someone you are doing something gracious, underserved, and favorable to a person who may or may not appreciate it. Listen Saints: You are not doing this for a reaction from the person, you do this because it is right and because it will free you.
