[prop] When you pray to the Father, If you want God to forgive your sins you must forgive others for what they did to you!
When you pray
what are some things that keeps us from being able to forgive?
also gives us a parable to explain how this works. Parable found in

And Forgive us our Debts

when we get to this part of the prayer
what is Jesus teaching us in part A
We know forgive us = give us a clean slate
Debt = what you owe
What is Jesus asking us to pray about?
Jesus teaches that we are to understand sin as a debt that we owe () ()
In verse 14 and 15 commentary he explains further
Matthew 6:14–15 NASB95
14 “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 “But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.
matthew 6:
Matthew 6:14 NASB95
14 “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
Jesus teaches that needs to understand sin as a debt that we owe
Matthew 6:14–15 NASB95
14 “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 “But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.
Different in Jesus time. they had a right to imprison you until it was paid.
this is a different Greek word in verse 14 and 15. the word that is translated into transgressions is Sin. in verse 12 its debt.
ins trespasses debts
the different words are there so we understand sin as a debt we owe
Verse 14 translates sin. Sin is a debt that we owe
this very clear in the FORGIVENESS Parable
Matthew 18:23 NASB95
23 “For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves.
In the parable Jesus compared the kingdom of heaven to King settling accounts
when you transgress you owe a debt to the King that must be paid.
Jesus is teaching us to settle your accounts
In prayer he wants us to maintain a Zero Balance on our transgression credit account.
so asking God to forgive us for our debts is a confession that we owe a debt.
why?
so asking God to forgive us for our debts is a confession that we owe a debt.
the wages of Sin is Death
debt was more serious in that day than it is now.
Matthew 18:26 NASB95
26 “So the slave fell to the ground and prostrated himself before him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you everything.’
[FCF] In today’s time we don’t have the same understanding what what it means to owe a debt we think of student loans and credit cards that we may or may not pay back
Different in Jesus time. they had a right to imprison you until the debt was paid. If you owe something it came with a sentence
Matthew 18:25–26 NASB95
25 “But since he did not have the means to repay, his lord commanded him to be sold, along with his wife and children and all that he had, and repayment to be made. 26 “So the slave fell to the ground and prostrated himself before him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you everything.’
[FCF] In today’s time we don’t have the same understanding what what it means to owe a debt we think of student loans and credit cards that we may or may not pay back
) (

)
Different in Jesus time. they had a right to imprison you until the debt was paid. If you owe something it came with a sentence
look at the parable that Jesus used in verse 26
Matthew 18:26 NASB95
26 “So the slave fell to the ground and prostrated himself before him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you everything.’
At the heart of what Jesus is asking us to pray is a serious confession that we owe a sin debt to God!
so serious that in should be done daily
so asking God to forgive us for our debts is a confession that we owe a debt.
Matthew 18:23 NASB95
23 “For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves.
Matthew 18:23 NASB95
23 “For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves.
Ask God to forgive Sin daily ( )
when you transgress you owe a debt to the King that must be paid.
Jesus is teaching us to settle your accounts
Jesus is teaching us to maintain a Zero Balance on our transgression credit account.
Ask God to forgive Sin daily ( )
Matthew 18:28 NASB95
28 “But that slave went out and found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and he seized him and began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay back what you owe.’
2 Corinthians 4:16 NASB95
16 Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.
This is a daily renewal
Matthew 18:23 NASB95
23 “For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves.
In the parable Jesus compared the kingdom of heaven to King settling accounts
when you transgress you owe a debt to the King that must be paid.
Jesus is teaching us to maintain a Zero Balance on our transgression credit account.
we are susceptible being in earthen vessels to messing up but God is interested in your attitude towards repentance
Remember this is a daily thing we should do. this is the blueprint or the framework for every prayer. asking for that clean slate with the Father.
just being in our flesh means we need a daily renewal of the inner person
If you get angry or have bitterness towards a person or act in a malicious way that gets charged to your account.

As We also Have Forgiven our Debtors

what does it mean to forgive your debtors?
Jesus is asking us to give a clean slate to everyone who has done you wrong
connect your practice of forgiveness with your experience () ()
if you have been forgiven you also must forgive Extent grace and mercy towards
Matthew 6:14–15 NASB95
14 “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 “But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.
Matthew 18:31–33 NASB95
31 “So when his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were deeply grieved and came and reported to their lord all that had happened. 32 “Then summoning him, his lord said to him, ‘You wicked slave, I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 ‘Should you not also have had mercy on your fellow slave, in the same way that I had mercy on you?’
matthew 18:
when you look at verse 28 the slave who was forgiven did not extend the same grace
he demanded that is fellow slave pay him back now! The King in this parable called him wicked!
[FCF] If we are honest we have been in the same position as the character in the forgiveness parable
when you pray Jesus is teaching us to
Recognize the consequences of not forgiving others ()
1 John 4:20–21 NASB95
20 If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God should love his brother also.
so this is a commandment which means you have the ability to choose
when you don’t forgive others you also grieve the Holy Spirit
stops the flow of the holy spirit
stops the flow of the holy spirit
when this happens the holy spirit get quiet and your flesh gets louder!
We need God’s help to forgive
[FCF] We rarely forgive other people when we pray. Most people have a hard time with forgiving others but don’t have a problem asking for forgiveness.
[?] how does the text change the [FCF]
Matthew 18:28 NASB95
28 “But that slave went out and found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and he seized him and began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay back what you owe.’
Ephesians 4:31–32 NASB95
31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.
Holy Spirit is our helper
he shows no mercy.
when you dont forgive stops the flow of the holy spirit
everytime you have bitterness, anger towards
when this happens the holy spirit get quiet and your flesh gets louder
when someone does you wrong and you dont respond with love you also make a charge to your transgression credit account
forgiveness is are hard at times.
