Who is God?

Jules Renard- “I don't know if God exists, but it would be better for His reputation if He didn't.”
This is a question that many people have tried to answer all through out history. What is God Like? Is another question that has been asked over and over through-out history and mankind has tried to come up with and answer to these question. History has always shown that the question asked wasn’t is there a God, but what is God like?
The Greeks used mythology to explain what the “gods” were like. The Romans did the same, and what you see is that their “gods” were very much like humans, even in there motives to do thing. They were driven by lust, and anger. They fought with each other, they lied and back stabbed each other. They were very much Human in their attributes and actions.
Jupiter and Zeus the “kings” over the Romans and Greek mythological “gods”- his reputation for violence often caused men to tremble in fear for he could easily punish them with one of his thunderbolts. Of course, he would give them a fair warning before the final, destructive bolt, and punishment was usually carried out only with the consent of the other gods.
The question we are looking at is not whether God existence or not but rather who is He? What is He like?
The Christian Bible agrees with the Greeks and the Romans that there is a God, but differs in that there is only one God, and He is the creator of everything. says, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Before there was anything what so ever there was God. Self sufficient, and everlasting. He had no beginning because He was the beginning of everything.
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth
He is outside of time because He created time. He needs nothing but yet everything needs Him because He is the creator and sustainer of life. Everything good, everything we need to survive has come because of Him. He created a world with everything we need to survive in it, because He is a good God.
He isn’t like the Greek and Roman “gods”, because He is a God that moved by compassion and love.

How God Handles Sin Shows His Grace

after God creates man and women (in His own image), He tells them to not eat for the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Up until this point there was no sin in the world nor was there evil, just God dwelling with His creation.
God is Holy- Perfect and set apart. There is no evil or sin within Him. Holiness is an attribute of God and of all that is fit for association with him. God alone is intrinsically holy (). God the Father is holy (), as is the Son (), while “Holy” is the characteristic designation of God’s Spirit (; ). God’s name is holy (), as are his arm (), ways (), and words ().
Genesis 3:1–7 ESV
Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
Gen 3:1-
Holiness is an attribute of God and of all that is fit for association with him. God alone is intrinsically holy (). God the Father is holy (), as is the Son (), while “Holy” is the characteristic designation of God’s Spirit (; ). God’s name is holy (), as are his arm (), ways (), and words ().
“Did God Actually say?” The doubt of God words, followed by doubt and not trusting “You will not surely die. For God Knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you be like God, knowing Good and evil.” God is holding something back from you that isn’t fair.
Then came the desire for something more than God. “When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and a delight for the eye.” This here is base of every sin ever committed. They are all founded on doubt, unbelief, and desire.
Every sin that we commit is founded on one or all of these three things. Think of your life and the times that you have fallen what was it based on?
Doubt- I don’t think God knows what he is doing on this one. i will handle this my way
unbelief- Surely things is the best for me, not what God has said. God doesn’t truly mean that in His word
Desire- I want that. I want to feel this way so I will do this.
We all make those same mistakes to this day. What was God’s response? What would your response be?
Genesis 3:15 ESV
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
God share the greatest News ever proclaimed in the history of the world- God proclaims that promise of one who would come and free us from the slavery to sin. Free us from the condemnation of our very owe sins. Even died in our place because our our sins.
God response shows He is Holy and Gracious. He is justice because He is going to deal with the evil of sin, their will be a punishment, but also so loving in providing the payment.
Romans 3:23–24 ESV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
Exodus 34:
Exodus 34:6–7 ESV
The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
God is both Just and Gracious to us. Sin must be dealt with, otherwise God would be like all the other “gods” corrupt. So what does God do? What would you do?
God fulfills His promise Her made in - He sent Jesus Christ, fulfilling His Justice and His Grace, His Mercy and His Holiness.
Ephesians 2:1–10 ESV
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Our Starting point in our journey of faith is with us Dead in our sins. the Bible is clear that we all have sinned. But God is a gracious God. God’s nature is to delight in giving unmerited favor to those who are undeserving. His grace is found most clearly in the salvation He has provided through Christ. Because of Sin, humanity is underserving of salvation: All of us have turned our backs on God, and as a result, we deserve death
Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
However, instead of leaving us in our sins, God has demonstrated His graciousness by providing atonement and forgiveness for our sins through the death and resurrection of Jesus
2 Cor
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
The sweetest words that any of us have ever heard are “But God” . God who is “rich in mercy” and because of His “great love” for us “made us alive” with Christ Jesus. What we see here is that Christianity isn’t about becoming a nicer person- we were “dead in our trespasses and sins” there is nothing nicer. Christianity is about become a New person.
2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Christ has made us a new creation. We go from being dead to the complete opposite. We are made alive. This isn’t because of moral efforts or any religious activity, but is solely because of who God is.
John 3:16–17 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Today if we come to Christ we can have the assurance of salvation not because of what we do or don’t do but because of His great work on the cross we can be made new.
Isaiah 53:4–6 ESV
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
