READ/PRAY
John 13:1–20 ESV
Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.” When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”
4 Reasons to Serve Others

Humility (1-5)

Humbled despite what he knew.
He knew it was time. -
He was fixing to die.
He was fixing to do more for them than could have possibly been understood, yet he washes their feet.
He loved them despite knowing how they would fail the tests moving forward.
He knew Judas would betray-
Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve.
Luke 22:3 ESV
Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve.
washed his feet anyway.
He knew Father had given Him all things- he was preeminent.
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
Colossians 1:15–20 ESV
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Philippians 2:5–8 ESV
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Humility is not a lack of self-worth.
Pride is usually the result of a lack of self worth, not a sense of true worth.
It’s a need to have an image of being strong and a fear of showing any weakness.
It keeps us from showing humility.

Shock (6-11)

Peter was shocked Jesus would do such a thing.
No way he was going to let someone serve him.
When we serve- we shock those around us.
We give away things free.

We reverse expectations and earn right to share with them about what Jesus did for them.
Churches are known as takers.
We want to be known as givers.
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Mark 10:45 ESV
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
“If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.”
Peter showed false humility.
In just a few hours Peter will be humbled.
Peter was cleansed, but he was far from changed. (sanctification)
Humble yourself enough to let Jesus cleanse you.
If Jesus can humble himself to serve us, how much more should we humble ourself in obedience to him?
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,
1 Peter 5:6 ESV
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,

Example (12-17)

Jesus washed their feet to show them how they are to act toward others.
We are called to be humble servants to everyone around us.
verse 17
ILL- Malawi- an example to my children.
Our children learn from our example.
Are we givers or receivers?

Belief (18-20)

Jesus knew his disciples= he knew what was in their heart. One was a betrayer.
“he who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.”=
“ate my bread”= been accepted around the table= been accepted as family.
“lifted his heel”= breach of honor, shaming the host in a traitorous way.
In Middle East showing the bottom of your foot is a great disrespect.
vs 19- Jesus is saying, remember this prophetic statement and believe.
The salvation of the lost is in the hands of humble, obedient believers who are called to serve the lost.
Jesus has been sent by God.
Disciples are sent by Jesus.
To reject Jesus’ messengers is to reject Jesus.
Matthew 10:40 ESV
“Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me.
If we do not share, they cannot receive Jesus.
How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent?
Romans 10:14–15 ESV
How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
CONCLUSION

Have you accepted Jesus’ great act of service?

Do you serve like Jesus?
