Take that card out sometime during the experience and fill out

And then, after the service, take that card to the welcome desk in the lobby. And that’s it! Later this week one of our pastors will connect with you. And once again, thanks for being here.

Attempts to

You and Me

Denial of death and the end of things - and sometimes even the acceptance of it prevents us from living.

Where This Search Gets it Right

The longing to connect with our created nature.

[SLIDE 4] The Better Question

What (who) is the source of (eternal) life?

[SLIDE 5] The King’s (Second) Coming

Second coming - Jesus has not been absent (with us through the spirit). Second coming is to bring to earth what is already a reality in heaven.

The King’s Coming

Revelation 19:11–16 ESV
Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.
Apocalypse - Prophetic story using symbolic imagery and figurative language to tell about the end of time and God’s act of righting all that is wrong, evil.
Part four of John’s vision
Part 1 - Jesus tells John to write to 7 churches
Part 2 - John at the throne
Part 3 - The battle of the lamb and the beasts
Part 4 - The lamb's victory

Victory Lap

Robe dipped in blood (). Cf crucifixion. In Jesus' role as the lamb that was slain that he conquers. In the power of suffering love, Christ rides conquering that which led to the shortening of life in every respect with heaven’s armies - angels. No weapons.
Sin, right? Yes, and more.
Heaven’s armies followed him, also on white horses. Their clothing resembles that of the bride in verse 8 (though here leukon, ‘white’, replaces lampron, ‘bright’, ‘splendid’). They are probably angels rather than the saints, for the saints are rather the bride (v. 7). Swete agrees that angels are meant and comments on the fact that they are clothed in white, whereas their Leader’s robe is dipped in blood: ‘He only has had experience of mortal conflict; for them bloodshed and death are impossible.’ Though they are called armies there is no mention of weapons and neither here nor elsewhere are they said to take martial action. The victory over evil is won by their Leader alone.
Reframation authors. As astonishing as forgiveness of personal sins is, God has done even more than in the incarnation, life, death, and resurrection of his, Son, Jesus Christ. The good news has relevance to every aspect of humanity’s brokenness, not just personal guilt before God.
War in scripture:
Not militarism
Jesus destroys the evil nations not with a literal sharp sword but with the proclaimed word that comes out of his mouth.
Focus on a person more than an event in whom the entire community of faith finds its life's meaning and direction
War images - focus on a person more than an event in whom the entire community of faith finds its life's meaning and direction and to defend the faithfulness of God
Defend the faithfulness of God
The army is not to engage in battle as the victory over evil is won by their Leader alone.
Victory of Jesus that we share in.
They benefit from his victory's blessing that belongs to all those who follow the Lamb wherever he goes (discipleship).

[SLIDE 7] Judgment

Comes from the character of the source of life (Jesus) - just, right. Nations will be assessed with justice in righteousness based on how they have responded to grace.
In accordance with the character expressed in these terms it is ‘in righteousness’ (with justice, niv) that he judges and makes war
Judgment based on our response to grace

[SLIDE 8] For the Win

There is a stern side to his nature, and John speaks of a sharp sword as going out of his mouth. His Word is powerful (cf. for the power of the divine Word). It is with the Word and not with armies that he smites the nations (cf. ). The armies play no part except as backdrop to the Word.

[SLIDE 9] To Rule and Reign

He will rule the nations with an iron sceptre (cf. 2:27; 12:5), which shows that he has absolute authority.
He cannot be resisted. There is an emphatic he (autos) with both will rule and treads.
Complete overthrow of those who resist God.
The Lamb is going to shepherd the redeemed.

[SLIDE 10] Names of the King

He can do this because of who he is…because of his name.
Name on uniforms - team, personal name, etc. Why did John say how Jesus publicized his name (on robe and thigh?) The social function of marks tattooed into human flesh was to indicate a persons community. Jesus' third name tattooed on his thigh and on his robe - he is Lord over God's emerging eternal community.
Names - related to his mission as messiah. Unknown name made public after his mission is completed (return).

Faithful and True

Blood - stains of his passion because of which he is called faithful and true to God's love and by which a people have been redeemed for God.
Word -
True - trustworthy, sincere, genuine, real in everything he says and does.
Non-concealing Revelation
The real state of affairs as revealed on which we can rely

[SLIDE 11] Word of God: King of Kings and Lord of Lords

The reality of
Its use by certain Greek philosophers, the Word was a kind of world soul.
Among the Hebrews it was the divine name.
To both Jew and Greek ‘the Word of God’ pointed to what was supremely important and supremely significant.

[SLIDE 12] Living With the End in View

Putting too much emphasis on End Times theories

Be Ready

Kingdom Already Prepares for the Kingdom to Come

Restoration at the Cause

Immortality (eternal life) will never happen from scientific efforts. Will only happen when what went wrong has been made right. Then everything will be restored to not its future version but to its original.

Follow the King

God's promise of salvation is fulfilled by Christ alone; however, its blessing belongs to all those who follow the Lamb wherever he goes (discipleship).

The church's declaration that Jesus, the Lamb is faithful and true - proclaiming the Kingdom is here, living as kingdom citizens, defining it for people to enter.
