The Change of Character

Titus 1:1–2 NKJV
1 Paul, a bondservant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect and the acknowledgment of the truth which accords with godliness, 2 in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began,
In the island of Crete there were false leaders and they were saying what they believed.
,
There is a connection between what you believe and how you behave.
We all heard the gospel before but it don’t really take route until our life changes! That’s how you know, not that you know something but that you believe. the key word is GODLINESS = to be like God!
How do you know when the Gospel has hit you?
Having the knowledge of the gospel in not enough that knowledge needs to change our thinking.
That’s what the world repentance mean.
It means the changing of the mind and when the mind is renewed we become more like Jesus.
All of this start with the preaching of the message.
Titus 1:3 ESV
3 and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior;
The word entrusted is Key. He uses several times with Timothy and now with Titus.
He recognizes that the preaching of the word has been entrusted to him and that he is passing that on to Titus.
He understands the power of that preaching to change a life to bring someone to live Godly.
The mission of Titus is to point out elders in the island of Crete.
But remember that the Cretans had a bad reputation .
Titus 1:12 ESV
12 One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”
Paul was quoting a line from a poem by Epimenides, a poet and philosopher who had lived in Crete 600 years earlier.
What he is hopping to do is to appoint leaders the opposite of what they were used to.
One of the problem of the Cretan churches is that the Christians there they had simulated there idea of Jesus the Christian God to there ideas of the Greek gods that they grow up with specific Zeus the chef god.
People claimed that ZEUS was borne on this island. They would love to tell mythology histories on how he would seduce woman and lie to get his way.
And Paul want’s to make it clear the God reveled through Jesus is totally different then Zeus, the opposite. God’s basic

Titus 1:2 ESV
2 in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began
Which God, who never lies… there is a reason for that line to be there.
The character traits is Faith and Truth and that the way of Christian life would be about truth.

The Task

Titus had to look and appoint new leaders, Elders that were the opposite of Cretans life style/culture.
Titus 1:6 NIV
6 An elder must be blameless, faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient.
Titus 1:6
They were to be Mature husbands and fathers.
Titus 1:7 NIV
7 Since an overseer manages God’s household, he must be blameless—not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain.
They were to be known for integrity, total devoted to Jesus, self control and generosity. The were to speak the truth / good news about Jesus and replace the corrupted leaders.
Who were these corrupted leaders?
Paul called them the circumcision group
They were ethnically Jews Cretan who said they followed Jesus. Similar to the Galatians these leaders were demanding that the non Christians would be circumcised and follow the laws of the Torah. If they wanted to become followers of the Jewish messiah.
Paul says they were obsess with Jewish Myth and human commands.
Titus 1:13–14 ESV
13 This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, 14 not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth.
Titus 1:14 ESV
14 not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth.
Titus 1:14And they are just in the church business to make money.
And they are just in the church business to make money.
And they are just in the church business to make money.
V7 - “not pursuing dishonest gain.
They claim to know God but their Cretan way of life deny’s him.
Titus 1:16 ESV
16 They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.
The result of this is they were bad example
People didn’t want to become Christians because of those bad examples.
Titus 1:9 ESV
9 He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.
