What is Sanctification difficult?
FIRST.
The nature of the work.
The heart is to be changed.
The current of the life is to be altered.
SECOND.
The deceits involved in the work (heart, which deceives two ways).
1. Often it takes morality for grace.
2. It’s ready to deceive us by taking a show of grace for grace.
Two particular graces that are hearts seek to deceive us are
First, Repentance.
a.
Many think they repent but it’s only because of the penalty but not for the offence itself.
b.
Shedding of a few tears, the ice begins to melt a little but freezes over again.
Second, Faith.
Oh how easily are we deceived by this counterfeit pearl?
It’s deception when people seek to apply the promises of the word and not the precepts!
To take the one but not the other.
3. Difficulties in sanctification arise out of the obstacles and hindrances of this work:
From within.
AND
From without.
