1 Corinthians 5

Intro: We live in a society that caters to the desires of the flesh of
A- The greatest example out there is the advertising industry that is designed to foster the response of:
1- I need that, I want that, I have to have that.
a- Set a 5 year old in front of TV commercials.
- We are the same way.
b- Look at the exercise equipment that was going to turn you into Arnold
- It now makes a good close holder.
- My $ 3000.00 plotter
- Driving to church on Saturday and the garbage sales.
2- I saw a commercial the other day
a- The Bosley hair club
- With their transplants I can get all the women I ever want.
· My wife’s imperfections are actually an attractant to me.
3- What are the attractions that are used to attract you to their products.
a- Your (people in other churches) desire for the flesh.
- PROMISE: Power, Prestige, Freedom, wealth, Sex (romance)
Ø The city of Corinth was known for it’s sexually immorality, Complete sexual misconduct seems to be the trigger for the judgement of God.
A- In our society sex (pornography & romance) is more accessible today than it’s ever been in this country.
1- If the 60’s & 70’s were the time of the sexual revolution THEN WE LOST that war.
a- Look at the internet
- e-mail, and sights
· Terry & American girl site
· Web & Net
2- The content of the curriculum being taught in our public schools.
a- Just because a book is a classic does not make it okay
- Berkley and the male sexuality class
3- The media
a- Movies, newspaper, TV,
- To prepare our children
· Video games & comic books
Ø What you need to know about a sexual relationship (everything you ever wanted to know about sex but never checked to bible on.)
A- Know that fornication is any and every form of sex apart form God’s plan for it in marriage.
1- Know that sex in a marriage is ordained and commanded by God. (Vicks’s Secrets)
a- As husbands are visually stimulated it is their wives duty to minister to them in that way.
b- If a wife is romantically stimulated it is their husbands duty to minister to them in that way.
- When all works as God designed it:
Genesis 2:24-25, Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
Hebrews 13:4, Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.
2- Marriage bed = sexual intercourse between a husband and wife.
a- Anything else is a perversion of God’s plan for a godly marriage and family.
- Look at the prevalence of fornication today and look at the state of the family today.
1 Corinthians 5:1-2, It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles—that a man has his father’s wife!2 And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you.
A- The case in point is the Catholic church today and the sexual problems that seem so prevalent.
1- Part of the problem is they have confused the lack of sexual relationship with holiness.
a- God has given me my wife to encourage my holiness.
Genesis 2:18, And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”
Turn to 1 Corinthians 7:5-9
B- “Actually reported”
1- He is astonished that the news of this is so well known that it has reached him in Ephesus 300 miles away.
a- His astonishment comes from the fact that he warned them. (See Verse 9).
Ø The specific sin?? “a man has his father’s wife”
A- The term “father’s wife” means step mother.
1- Is this so bad; what does God say???
Leviticus 18:7-8, ‘The nakedness of your father’s wife you shall not uncover; it is your father’s nakedness.
Deuteronomy 22:30, “A man shall not take his father’s wife, nor uncover his father’s bed.
2- Even in the Roman culture this is a crime
B- Just as bad as the sin is the churches tolerance of it.
1- Are we not to be tolerant????
a- A good guideline is to read the bible and then be tolerant of what God is tolerant of and intolerant of what God is intolerant of.
1 Peter 4:17, For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?
Read Verses 3-4
A- Paul’s attitude is: “Those of you who say that you are of me, what would I have done?
1- You know my spirit (persona)
a- Love the sinner and hate the sin.
- Jesus told the woman caught in adultery that He does not condemn her but that she should go and sin no more.
1 Samuel 15:32-33, Then Samuel said, “Bring Agag king of the Amalekites here to me.” So Agag came to him cautiously. And Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”33 But Samuel said, “As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women.” And Samuel hacked Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal.
Ø How are situations such as these to be dealt with??
1 Corinthians 5:5, deliver such a one (unrepentant sinner) to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
A- There are guidelines remember we are a hospital and not a courtroom.
Turn to Matthew 18:15-17
1 Timothy 1:19-20, having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck,20 of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.
Ø Is this not a unloving and uncaring thing to do?? Why such an extreme??
Read verses 6-8
A- Paul uses the illustration of Israel and Egypt and the first Passover.
1- The children of Israel were to be covered by the blood (door post)
2- They were also to take no leavened bread when they left Egypt the next day.
a- Leaven = the influence of sin.
- Look at the influence that Egypt had
Turn to Exodus 32:1-6, 19-29
3- Things spiritual and of the flesh will never mix.
a- In the church, in business, in marriage
Read 2 Corinthians 6:11-8
Ø All this being the case
Read verses 9-13
A- Is this really applicable to the church today.
1- U.S. News (the world) took a survey:
a- OF the group surveyed with in the church:
- 1 in 4 reported having had some kind of sexual contact with someone other than their spouse.
- 1 in 10 said they committed adultery
- NO less troubling was the behavior of church leaders who could have stopped the abuse but didn’t.
· This report is even more distressing when I tell you that the group surveyed was members of the clergy.
