1 Corinthians 12:10

August 25, 2002

Intro: We continue in our study of the experience of the Holy

spirit that empowers man for ministry.

A-  The Epi experience (Upon, Baptisim).

1-   That which Paul knew was essential for the church to fulfill the commission given by the Lord.

1 Corinthians 12:1,Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:

1-   The Holy Spirit working in us for the purpose of working  through us according to the gifting given to us.

a-   We have see in verses 6 & 11 The Greek word “energanuma”(works)  = Energy.

-         The energy of God working in us.

B-  Concerning the Baptism of the H.S. and the  Gifts of the Spirit.

1-   They are available to All CHRISTIANS who ask.

2-   According to How the spirit wills.

3-   For the purpose of edifying the church (not me)

C- The gifts are generally broken down in 2 categories.

1-   The speaking gifts: Teachings and prophesies.

2-   The serving gifts: administrations, Helps.

A-  We know that our Spiritual gifting is proof of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Ø Again a couple of things to consider in relating the gifting to yourself.

#1- This list is not all inclusive.

A-  It is an outline to lead us in the Lords direction for our ministry.

1-   You’ll not find certain gifting of the H.S. listed here.

a-   Counseling, parking, cleaning.

#2- No one gift is any more important than any other.

Matthew 10:40-42,  “He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.41 “He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.42 “And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”

A-  All those who participate in a blessed service.

Ø Last week we looked at the gifts mentioned in verses 8-9

A-  Word of wisdom

1-   The proper application of knowledge for the work of ministry or spiritual matters.

a-   A necessary gift for anyone who desires to serve God.

James 1:5, If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

b-   This gift is a “word of wisdom”

B-  Next is a word of knowledge.

1-   “Word of knowledge”: To know of something that you could not possibly know form any external source.

a-   Not something learned, taught, or read about.

-         A supernatural knowledge that comes from God.

C-  The gift of faith

1-   This is the intensive ability to trust God in difficult and circumstances and in the face of overwhelming obstacles and human impossibilities.

a-   An ability to take the promises of God to heart.

D-  The gift of healing

1-   I often wonder if the possessor of this gift is the person praying for the healing or the person receiving the healing.

Ø Tonight, in Verse 10, we are going to look at the gifts of MIRACLES,  PROPHECY, DISCERNING OF SPIRITS, TOUNGES, AND THE INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES.

A-  The Working of miracles

Acts 15:12, Then all the multitude kept silent and listened to Barnabas and Paul declaring how many miracles and wonders God had worked through them among the Gentiles.

1-   A supernatural intrusion into the natural world and its natural laws explainable only by divine intervention.

a- With their purpose being

John 2:11, This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples (foster) believed in Him.

2-   A the main manifestation of this gift would be the simple, we so easily look for the miraculous.

a- Remember the Jews of Jesus’ Time.

b-   I think we see this gift every time a person responds to the gospel message.

-         Notice how salvation fits our description of a miracle.

3-   Who has the gift of miracles

a-   I do not know of anyone nor have I ever heard of someone who, legitimately, possesses it.

-         But I think this lends to the nature of the gift and the person who would be ABLE to posses it.

Turn to Acts 3:11-…4:4

Turn to Acts 14:8-18

b-   Very few would be humble enough to possesses this gift.

-         I believe that this gift is exorcised, for the most part unnoticed (after the fact) in the midst of ministry.

B-  Important to know these guideline because this is something that Satan is able to duplicate for his glory.

Mark 13:22,  “For false (anti) christs and false prophets will rise and show signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

A-  The gift of Prophecy

1-   This literally means “to speak forth or to proclaim the will of God”.

a-   Our main example of a Prophet is the example set in the Old Testament.

-         Men speaking the will of God to His people.

·        I believe this office of a Prophet was closed with John the Baptist.

John 3:30, “He must increase, but I must decrease.

Hebrews 1:1-2, God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets,2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;

Jude 3,  Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.

-         The Old Testament Prophet has been replaced with the New Testament witness.

B-  Now the New Testament Prophet

1-   There are 4 references to specific New Testament .

#1- John The Baptist

#2- Jesus Christ

#3- Agabus (the 2 instances of Agabus’ prophecies seem to be along

                    word of knowledge Acts11:28, 21:10)

#4- Others before the written word existed (bibles)

          Judas,Silas,The daughters of Philip, Paul,

Joel 2:28, “And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy…

2-   Do I believe that the gift of prophecy is active today YES.

Read1Corinthians 14:1-5 & 39

a-   It is seen in recognizing God’s call upon a life.

1 Timothy 4:14, Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.

b-   It is seen in those who are open to speak, according to God’s word, lead by the Holy Spirit.

2 Peter 1:21,  for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

                                      - Every writer of the Bible is a Prophet.

c-   And seems to work, at times, in conjunction with a work of knowledge.

C-  What about false prophets.

1 John 4:1,Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

1-   How????

Deuteronomy 18:22, “when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.

Read Deuteronomy 13:1-5

-         A biblical check list concerning a Prophet.

·        Does the prophecy line up with the Word of God.

·        Does it line up with facts.

·        Is Jesus Christ glorified

-         False prophets today

·        Joseph Smith

·        Pope

·        TBN

A-  Discerning of spirits

1 John 4:1, Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

1-   The number 1 gift necessary for counseling and leadership.

a-The example of the exorcising of this gift.

Acts 17:11, These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.

-         Without the Word of God there is no discernment.

b-   Examples today: Walter Martin,  Hank Hannegraph,  Kurt Van Gorden.

2-   This gift could manifest itself in you personally by.

a-   an uneasiness within you,  unrest in ministry with a person, the darkness that does not coexist with light.

-         Ray

2 Corinthians 11:13-15,  For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ.14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.

2 Peter 2:3, By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words;…

3-   The New Testament examples.

a- Jesus and Judas
