1 Corinthians 10:14-22

*Intro:* In verses 1-13 Paul addressed 3 areas where we have no liberties.
*A-  **3 things that were available to the church at Corinth that Paul, using O.T. examples, encouraged the church to avoid.*
1-   *Being: *Idolatry, immorality, and complaining against God.
a-   He addressed eating meat that was offered to idols and talked about the liberties that we have.
-         But now he warns against idolatry itself.
Ø *By definition Idolatry is = image worship or God deserving honor given to a God or man created object.*
*Romans 1:21-23*,  because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.22
Professing to be wise, they became fools,23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.
A-  Idolatry can manifest it self in various ways.
1-   Things of Nature
*Read Deuteronomy 4:14-19*
2-   Any sort of image
*Isaiah 44:17*,  And the rest of it he makes into a god, His carved image.
He falls down before it and worships it, Prays to it and says, “Deliver me, for you are my god!”
3-   The worship of the rue God by an image.
*Exodus 32:4-6*, And he received the gold from their hand, and he fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a molded calf.
Then they said, “This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!”5
So when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it.
And Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow is a feast to the Lord.”6
Then they rose early on the next day, offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
4-   Angles
*Colossians 2:18*,  Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
5-   The worship of dead of past heroes (saints)
*Psalm 106:28-29*,  They joined themselves also to Baal of Peor,
And ate sacrifices made to the dead.
Thus they provoked Him to anger with their deeds, And the plague broke out among them.
B-  New testament examples:
*Ephesians 5:5*,  For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.
*Colossians 3:5*,  Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
*Philippians 3:19*,  whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things.
(Sensual things).
C-  Idolatry does not have to be something physical it can take place in our hearts.
*Ezekiel 14:3-4*,  “Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts, and put before them that which causes them to stumble into iniquity.
Should I let Myself be inquired of at all by them?4 “Therefore speak to them, and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Everyone of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart, and puts before him what causes him to stumble into iniquity, and then comes to the prophet, I the Lord will answer him who comes, according to the multitude of his idols,
D-  The bible says of those who practice idolatry that they:
1-   Forget God,  go astray from God,  Pollute the name of God,  defile the sanctuary of God,  are estranged from god,  forsake God,  hate God,  provoke god,  Have fellowship with demons.
E-  The Greek gods were manifestations of demons used to glorify the flesh.
1-   Zeus = god of god (power and might),  Poseidon = seas,  Hades = underworld,  Ares = war,  Apollo = sun,  Aphrodite = things sexual.
Ø *Paul now looks at the contrast of the witness the church projects as they combine the worship of idols with the worship of God.*
*A-  **Participation in a feast to idols and the Lords supper.*
*1 Corinthians 10:14*,  Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
*Romans 8:29*,  For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.
*A-  **Man’s nature being contrary to God’s is always trying to mold God into his image.*
*2 Corinthians 5:7*,  For we walk by faith, not by sight.
1-   When man’s faith starts to wane he comes to the point where he needs to see something.
a-   Churches that advertise the experiential feed on this.
-         Come and SEE, FEEL, TOUCH.
b-   The God ordained way to See, feel, and touch is through His word.
-         God says: believe, walk by faith and not by sight.
·        Experiential can deceive.
·        Faith rewards
2-   The experiential things regress to idolatry
a-   The cross,  statues,  relics,  even the communion elements.

*1 Corinthians 10:15*,  I speak as to wise men; judge for yourselves what I say.
*A-  **In verse 14 we saw that he is speaking to believers (“beloved”), who we know: posses the Holy spirit,  will receive the wisdom from God if they ask.*
*James 1:5*,  If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
1-   Here what I say, ask for wisdom, examine what was said in the light of scriptures.
*1 Corinthians 10:16-18*,  The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ?
The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?17
For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread.18
Observe Israel after the flesh: Are not those who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?
Ø *To illustrate his point Paul first goes to the example of the communion meal.*
A-  “The cup of blessing”
*Matthew 26:27-28*,  Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you.28 “For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
1-   Blood = sacrificial death = That which was required for the forgiveness of sins.
a-   When we drink the wine (juice) we, as Christians, are presenting ourselves as a unified  family in Christ because of His death.
-         A reflection of the perfect heavenly fellowship.
2-   Communion = sharing,  to have a common purpose, to come into fellowship with.
*1 Corinthians 1:9*,  God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
*Philippians 2:1*, Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy,
*Philippians 3:10*,  that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,
*2 Corinthians 8:4*, imploring us with much urgency that we would receive the gift and the fellowship of the ministering to the saints.
*1 Corinthians 10:16b-17*, …  The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?17
For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread.
A-  Bread = The communion of the physical body of Christ.
1-   No body – no blood – no bond with God.
a-   Speaks of His earthiness, and incarnation.
B-  To break bead = eat from the same loaf.
Ø *As partakes in this meal we proclaim unity with Christ knowing that we will be with Him when He comes again.*
*Read 1 Corinthians 12:12-13*
*Transubstantiation: *The bread and blood become the actual blood and body of Christ = IDOLATRY.
*1 Corinthians 10:18*,  Observe Israel after the flesh: Are not those who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?
Ø *Now he gets to the point of the matter.*
A-  An idol in it self is nothing.
*1 Corinthians 8:4*,  Therefore concerning the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one.
1-   They are blind, deaf, dumb, and helpless.
a-   That being the case what does it matter, couldn’t a case be made for freedom to partake in these feasts?
-         DOES DOCTRINE MATTER?
*Read verses 20-21*
*A-  **His 2nd point is, just as the communion elements are nothing with-in themselves but are associated with Jesus Christ.*
1-   An idol is nothing to itself but point to demons.
*See Deuteronomy 32:15-17*
2-   Paul could ask as we should ask  “who’s family do you wish to be associated with?”
*Joshua 24:15*,  “And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.
But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
*1 Corinthians 10:22*,  Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy?
