Sermon Tone Analysis

1 Timothy 4:4-10

 

(4:4, 5) The word “creature” is /ktisma/ (κτισμα), which is better translated here “created thing.”

When we offer thanks at the table for the food we are about to eat, it is sanctified, Paul says.

The word “sanctify” is /hagiazo/ (ἁγιαζο), “to set apart for God.” Vincent says: “Not /declared/ holy, but /made/ holy.

Thanksgiving to God has a sanctifying effect.

The food in itself has no moral quality (Rom.

14:14), but acquires a holy quality by its consecration to God; by being acknowledged as God’s gift, and partaken of as nourishing the life for God’s service.”

The food is sanctified by the Word of God and prayer Vincent says again: “The custom of grace at meat appears in I Samuel 9:13.

Christ blessed the loaves and fishes (Matt.

14:19; 15:36).

Paul on the ship gave thanks for the meal which the seamen ate (Acts 27:35).

*The Pastor (Timothy) needs to teach the church the Word of God*.

a.

The church needs to never stop receiving the word.

Vs. 6

b.

The ministers (servants) of the word here means we all must continue to teach the word to all those who are in the church.

c.       Timothy was to help the church see the victory that is theirs at the end of the race.

Vs.7

 

 

nto” is /pros/ (προς), “with a view to.”

Just as a Greek athlete would exercise with a view to winning in the athletic contests, so Timothy is exhorted to exercise with a view to excelling in godliness.

There needs to be continued training in  Spiritual things.

Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.

*8*     For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come[3]

Like the athlete we are to (labor) in our learning o0f the life of God.

II.

What would keep the world from seeing Jesus?

1.    Unhealthy Christians

2.    There is an infection that tries to kill or witness.

stressed out woman on a busy street was tailgating the local postmaster made his way home from work.

Suddenly the light turned yellow and the man did the right thing and stopped.

At this the tailgating woman hit the roof and then her horn screaming in frustration.

As her tirade went on she heard a tap on her window and there stood a police officer.

The officer ordered her out of the car, arrested her took her downtown to booking, fingerprinted her and placed her in a holding cell.

After a couple of hours the officer returned and apologized for the ordeal.

Explaining “im very sorry for this but when I came up behind you while you where laying on the horn and cussing a blue streak at the guy in front of you I noticed your WWJD licenses plate frame, your follow me to Sunday school bumper sticker, and your Chrome plated Christian fish emblem.

Seeing these and your actions I simply assumed that you had stolen the car.

What would make a person who you would least expect to act like that behave in such a way?

Influence from outside sources taking up residence within her being.

These things can be called spiritual infections.

We are warned in scripture that we will be threatened by religious lies until the second coming of Christ (2nd Thessalonians 2:4)

 

Many times these come from leaders who clam to know the truth.

Jesus declared all food clean (Mark 7:18-19) \\ \\ - Peter too learned this truth (Acts 10:13-28)

 

III.

INFECTIONS THAT MAKE US LETHARGIC (11-16) \\ \\ a. Religious putdowns keep us from doing our best service for Christ \\ \\ - Others may put us down because we are too young or old for service in their opinion \\ \\ - Paul is telling Timothy and us a well that if we want to be successful in our ministry we have to keep on doing it regardless of the condescending remarks \\ \\ - Looks can be deceiving \\ \\ - David was small but became a great King \\ \\ - Most of the Apostles were simple men with little education \\ \\ Illustration: The little boy and the truck wreck: Out on the interstate there was a truck that was to tall to go under a bridge, however the driver didn’t know this ahead of time and he got his truck stuck under the bridge.

Trying to figure how to get the truck out the diver and police on the scene couldn’t come up with any ideas on how to get this truck out, so they brought in the engineer who built the bridge, again no possible ideas came forth, that was until the engineers 4 year old little boy looked up at his dad and said “why don’t you just let the air out of the tiers?”
