38 Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home.
(v.38) Jesus after some time in ministry went from a local, to a regional, and then to a National phenomenon. Word about him spread rapidly. Word about his healings, teachings, and his power became well known throughout the region. In this particular story a woman named Martha invited him into her home.

(v.38) As the host Martha and anyone in her family particularly the women would have been responsible for feeding everyone in the room

39 She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word.
(v.39) The bible then brings in another Character into the story. Martha had a sister who’s name was Mary. The text tells us that Mary sat at Jesus’s feet so she could hear him teach & preach.
(v.39) I want to refocus on Martha though. You will notice that Mary is at Jesus feet listening to the word. So Mary stayed with Jesus at least long enough for him to greet folks, get his feet washed(which was custom), wash his hands, then sit down to preach. This tells us that Martha spent some time by herself running around the kitchen trying to put a meal together. Now as an added nugget. Because she is serving Jesus she probably would have prepared the most she could afford. So this would have been a fine meal with all the best China.
(v.39) We know that some had elapsed; enough time for Martha to began to heat up about the fact there her sister was not in the kitchen helping, but instead was sitting at the master feet

40 But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.”

(v.40) “But Martha was distracted with all her preparations” this transition gives us a little insight into what was going in the kitchen. While Mary was listening to the preacher Martha was running around the kitchen like a chicken with its head cut off. She is thinking about the roasted lamb, she is worried that the potatoes might be undercooked, she is worried if she has enough forks, spoons, and knives to accommodate all the guest. She is worried about whether she will have someone to help her clean after dinner.

(v.40) This observation is how I can tell you that Martha had worked herself into a frenzy because of the distractions that she committed too. Notice Martha attitude towards Jesus in (v.38) “Martha welcomed Him into her home”
What happened to Martha in that small space of time?
-She took on more than what she could handle, and then blamed Jesus for not doing something about it.
(v.40) Notice how she came at Jesus. “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone?” Look at what she said. She charged Jesus with being apathetic to her situation. Apathy is when you see a problem but you do not lift your finger to help solve it.
How did Jesus get involved he did not tell Martha to cook that five course meal?
-Culturally speaking Jesus as the speaker should have instructed Mary to go back and help the women in the kitchen. Martha was essentially blaming Jesus for just allowing Mary to sit at his feet and listen to the message. This is classic we do things outside of God’s will, then we get mad at God cause our blood pressure is through the roof.
-In the Garden Adam got distracted and made a horrible, but in the end when God confronted him he tried to blame God.
-Don’t we do the same things sometimes. We get into relationships that Jesus didn’t authorize, we take jobs that Jesus didn’t authorize, we took on responsibilities that Jesus didn’t authorize, and then we have the nerve to get mad at Jesus when we are overwhelmed and frustrated.

41 But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; 42 but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”
(v.41) Jesus exposes the problem with Martha. She gets worried and bothered by so many things. Martha is easily distracted. Martha has trouble keeping her eyes on things that are of a higher importance.
(v.41) Look at Jesus words “but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part,” Jesus are sure about this. Martha was cooking dinner. Since when did eating not become necessary. Jesus says there is one thing that is truly “necessary”. Food is necessary for physical living but it is not necessary for Eternal living. Look at the compliment he gives to Mary. “Mary has chosen the good part” Mary said I know we got to eat, I know I am supposed to be in there helping, I know my sister is probably tired and needs my help, but right the most important thing for me to do right now in this moment, while he is in my house, and that is to sit at his feet and learn. What Mary was saying by her action is that “Spiritual Food is more important to me than Physical Food” she is putting God before her human desires and her culture.
(v.41) “which shall not be taken away from her” What Jesus was saying in that moment is that the teaching she is getting will not be like a meal which you eat and three hours later you get rid of. This is some eternal food that Mary is getting and it will be with her all the way until she gets to heaven.
This statement by Jesus gives me some clues to his sermon. He is delivering the Gospel to Her. He is preaching the message of good news, and it sounds like Mary accepted that message. Jesus says your salvation is more important than food.
