Jeremiah 36:2 CSB
“Take a scroll, and write on it all the words I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah, and all the nations from the time I first spoke to you during Josiah’s reign until today.
36.1-8 [Establishment of Consistency]
What was Jeremiah to write? [all the words God had spoken to him over the time of his ministry; not a memoir, or diary, or…; how about that for consistency?]
Why write now, twenty-two or twenty-three years into his prophetic ministry? [any historical indicators to back up v. 3? (Battle of Carchemish - Babylon defeats Assyria c. 605-604 BC)]
What was the next step? [that the words be read to the people; Jeremiah couldn’t…why?]
36.9-19 [Courageous Reading]
Who were the audience for the second reading of the scroll? [The king’s officials]
What motivated their response? [what was it…& why?]
36.20-26 [Courage Challenged]
Who was the audience for the third reading? [King Jehoiakim]
What is significant about the reactions to the king’s actions? [disregard for God’s word/message…by the kings action and those indifferent to his actions; a limited concern by the named advisors of the king…maybe Jeremiah has some good intel on the enemy?]
The reaction didn’t stop with the message, did it? [what was the final extent of Jehoiakim’s reaction? seeking to seize (and kill) Jere & Baruch]
36.27-32 [Consistent. Courageous. Constant.]
After losing that round, what were Jeremiah and Baruch to do? [rewrite all that had been written…AND, more—including what was definitely going to happen to the king and others in justified response by God.]
In relationship to God’s word, our lives must be CONSISTENT, COURAGEOUS, & CONSTANT.
