We like to play with things. Especially things we think we have control over. Some things in life we think we have control while amusing ourselves only to learn that it has control over our lives.
The only way we can control our members is by killing them not controlling them. Not playing with them. To put them far away from us.
So for fun what are the 5 hardest Animals to kill????
5. East African Giant Snails- These are so hardy the the locals have tried everything from quarantines, pesticides, poisons to introducing predators in case that wasn’t enough the even burst out the flame throwers which seems overkill but would be overkill if it actually worked. Nope didn’t.
4. Water Bears - No not yogi but a water born micro-organism much smaller creature that moves like a bear … They can survive -273 degrees Celsius … They won’t cook up either and are resistant to radiation, liquid nitrogen, mineral acids. Space seems that last frontier for these things to live in.
3. Zombie Bugs- A cross between a giant cockroach and a cricket. Freeze it then thaw it out and it comes back to life.
2. Lungfish- A fish that can also live for periods of time with no supportive living area. The lungfish can wrap itself in a snot cocoon and live for long period of time living off the nutrients of it’s own body.
1. Immortal Jellyfish- Just keep on living from Mature to infant to mature .... repeat
These are animals, but what about our Sin nature. Paul uses a word to that has lost a lot of it’s meaning today and as a Christian it feels awkward using a word to describe an action as a christian all my life I’ve been told is bad, but not in the context of what is being killed.
We must if we are to be successful as a believer KILL sin.
John Owen said it best … “be killing sin or sin will be killing you.”
How Can we KILL our sin?
I. Mortify Your Members vs 5
A. We must murder our Members vs 5 a.m
it must be understood that we not talking about religiously buffeting or punishing our body, but more than punishing our members. It says MORTIFY … this literally means to send something to the morgue (Put to Death) my and your members.
How can we put to death sin in our lives?
Galatians 5:24–25 KJV 1900
And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Ephesians 5:2–4 KJV 1900
And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
Ephesians
B. Crucifixion is the Crux
1. Crucifixion is gradual, not sudden.
2. Crucifixion is painful, not pleasant.
3. Crucifixion is not natural death, it is imposed.
Galatians 2:20 KJV 1900
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
C. Put Down the Passions 5a.
1. The Lust of the Flesh: Sensuality the passion to fulfill fleshly desires.
2. What are the top fleshly five?
a. Kill Fornication- this sin which is greek we get the word porneia is gone wild in our culture today. It’s all about fulfilling their own fleshly desire. Practically how can you put these Down.
i. Flee Fornication
ii. Aviod Fornication
iii. Abstain from Fornication
b. Kill uncleaness is the act that starts on the inside but reveals itself in evil actions. The Greek word is akatharsia combines with the idea of cleaning adding a strong be clean. Be clean? Not
Mark 7:21–22 KJV 1900
For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
Mark
Results of Uncleanness -
What should we do to prevent uncleanness?
c. Kill inordinate affections: The supercharge desire for lust that begins to control our lives. Scripture is the key to manage the control.
d. Kill evil concupiscence: A passionate longing for what is forbidden. Do you long for what God hates? Remember the warning give us.
e. Kill covetousness: The out of control desire for more and more. Agustav Gullet - Willy Wonka. It violates one of the Ten Commandments. It is root of all sin. Why does the Gospel of Luke warn us in ?
Why put these to Death?
II. Remember the Wrath vs 6-7
A. Consider God’s Wrath and it’s Object vs. 6
II. Remember the Wrath vs 6-7
1. Identfication by what you do
2. Actions reveal who own’s you.
B. Consider your Former State and It’s Just Deserts vs 7
1. Remember the sad state of affairs we were before Christ slave to our sinful desire. Objects of Warth.
2. Remember to Remember so we might be humbled.
3. Remembrance helps us to recall God’s mercy to us!
III. Discarded Deeds: vs 8-9
A. Temper Your Temper
1 Anger:
2. Wrath:
3. Malice:
We must deal all the way with these sin. Get them to tap our of our lives. We like these “Pet Sins” The room in our house that has the sign on it Keep out. One one allowed.
B. scrutinize your speech:
1.Blasphemy: To curse or damn … prerogatives of Deity
2. Filthy Communication: obscene or suggestive speech. if it is doubtful it is dirty.
3. Lying separated form above sins with it’s own imperative: Never lie one to another.
This is an old man that cannot be reasoned with put off or put away. He must be put off or mortified.
So … Mortify your members / Remember God’s Wrath / Discard the Deeds of the Old Man.
You and I can only do this when the new man has been recieved thought the cross of Jesus Christ.
