BBBI - 2019.07.17 - PM - Two Outstanding Traits of a Godly Life (Gen. 39)

You're finding your place in Genesis chapter number 39. Call Jessica ASCO word of Grace from you as I Endeavor to preach tonight. I wasn't sure if I was going to make it here tonight. Actually with everything that went on this afternoon. I'm suffering from something along the lines like vertigo. I don't know what happened everything. We just spinning earlier today. So. I'm here. I'm well and able to stand up to sudden movements are in my prayers at a hundred percent sure tonight, but nevertheless we're going to look at Genesis chapter 39 and see what God has for us here. And really I think you know, the story is a familiar one, so we won't read the entire chapter, but I would encourage you to do so outside of our Bible study together. I want to try your attention. really down to verse number 7 and it came to pass after these things. That is that Joseph Master's wife Potiphar's wife Joseph and she should lie with me but he refused and said behold my master what is not what is with me in the house and has committed all the apps to my hand. There is none greater in this house than I've either had to cut back anything for me. But then you just now or just wife how they can I do this great wickedness and sin against God and drop down Bruce number 12 things progressed and they continue to intensify with her seduction toward him anniversary for 12. You know how the story continues there's false accusations look down and verse number 20, if you would have received Joseph's master potiphar came and put him into the prison a place where the Kings prisoners were bound and he was there in the prison but the Lord was with Joseph and showed him Mercy gave him favor in the sight of the key for the prison. Heavenly father. I pray that you would help us to understand your work clearly tonight. I asked for divine strength enablement. I pray for unction and you work goes forth. I pray that there's nothing in me in my weakness in mind for me to hinder your word from having free forced and I pray that you'll take the scriptures and do what I can't do as meditate on them and under them it always amazed at how your Holy Spirit and lead us to places even just reading verses that I don't necessarily have in my study, but you take it in the heart of your people and and a clean things that I I never sent it to them or that's the Holy Spirit and I pray that you would do that tonight at your word truly would have free horse among us and that we would grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ being wanted is image. I pray this precious name and Charles Durham and you open that book with an interesting illustration illustration. He talked about several several hundred years ago. They're being on the island of Cape Hatteras off the shore of North Carolina. There were men whose business it was to get ships to run aground on the shoulders to stop the island. These men were called Records who made her living Gathering up parts of cargo loads of all the ships that would be crafts with a lighted Lantern fastened to the head of an old nag. That's a horse the meaning of that was the name of their Village they walk up and down and back and forth and so are out at Sea in the darkness. The Mid-Atlantic night ships were searching for passage past the islands. They would mistake that bobbing light for the stern of a boat Stern Light of the ship that they supposed to found safe passage, but then they would turn into David run run aground on diamond show in the morning. The Wreckers would come and gather the timber for new houses. They would get utensils for their purses. It was a thriving business. And we will talk about three primary records. Just waiting to glean from our our our shipwreck and we need need to be aware of that as we look at Joseph and his life here tonight. We need to remember we had kind of a in abbreviation didn't we? We are a parenthetical I should say in the story of Joseph. We began back in chapter 37 considering this young man 17r ugly and he's in charge of his brothers used to go there knocking Joseph and Joseph is just trying to serve guys trying to do with his dad said he whines up at the at the violence of his brothers wanted to kill him but they don't succeed in that they are for reading that plan and they wind up throw them in a bit until lo and behold providentially by the way. You have some Vidya night Merchant in coming through the area just in time to the beat. Well Genesis 38:8, we picked up the story of Judah and Tamar and we spend some time last time together looking at at where this belongs and I'm convinced more and more that if we don't have channel 38, we don't have the whole picture because Genesis 37 introduces us to Joseph and we find out who he's on his way down to Egypt now back at the ranch remember those shows

He winds up getting married to a K-9 woman who later on dies and after she dies. He's not done the right thing by his daughter-in-law according to the law of the day. And so she takes matters into her own and I want you to notice seduced by a woman. And so these two accounts stand in contrast to one another so thank with me what would response to his seduction of Kmart. Did he come out of that up skate? No, he did not what about Joseph and his seduction by Potiphar's wife and he coming out of that unscathed. Well, it depends on how you define unscathed unscathed size. Absolutely because he said, how can I be this great wickedness and how Joseph is being picture in direct contrast shoot up in chapter 38 chapter 390 missile that you miss all that if you didn't have chapter 38, so as we look at the life of Joseph really there's a symmetry to this passage that would allow us to cover it into into main areas. And so I'd like to do that with you. Call home from in there somewhere along the way if I can get you to my notes, but that may not happen. I did not cover the very first portion to let's go back there. And let's go to chapter 37 verse number 36. It says in the midianites told him a captain of the guard know those words almost identical chapter 39 notice. His name is given his name is not mentioned elsewhere after this. I think that's because we have here a title given to us. This was a man of stature. This is a man who who is a certain and he is an officer to Pharaoh. He is a man with credentials and this is a ra. Spectacle man in paros a roadside regime there. And so he I don't know I put him in the military. I think that's how I don't disagree with that necessarily but I see him as being over the captain of the Guard whether that's a militaristic type of guard that he's over or whether it's a award and he is actually over the prison. I kind of almost lean that way because if you look at chapter 40 and you do I say you on this perm the the captain of the Guard looking for that appeared that the guard is going to show up again I hear in the prison. So I tend to lean towards a he is over over this military military prison of Arab remember if we remember the verse that we read it says in The Keeper of the prison. LSU verse 20. Where was it 20 or 20? Joseph Master potiphar took him and put him into the prison a place where the king prisoners were bound. This isn't just any old run-of-the-mill dungeon. It is a dungeon don't know what I'm saying. Because I don't think they were nice to Joseph when they put them in there in any stretch of the imagination, but this is not the run-of-the-mill how to see what's going on here in a greater way, I believe. I want you to know if this phrase as well inverse number to but this is the first time that you'll see this phrase. There are four four instances of this direct Rays 8 uses of this name all together in chapter 39 and after chapter 39, you only find this name used one other time all the way to chapter 50. I believed to the end of the book that's interesting to me in this chapter by false accusations and who God is the place where there's nowhere to go but up and he's also a doing things by Divine Providence UT this phrase hear. The Lord was with Joseph. The Lord was with Joseph. So if you want to see something that sympathized in this chapter, I think we would be another preacher said approved on this add a stop by nailed it on the head. They see the emphasis on the Lord was with Joseph the Lord. Joseph in the application and whatever you're going through remember if you're serving God the Lord is with you in that makes all the difference it really does and that's what's going to make the difference for Joseph as she is under potiphar and then he's accused and put it in the prison under the prisoner of the prison.

Although working hard as good as we need hard workers today the Joseph. I'm sorry. This is not something that Joseph is going to work itself out up. It's not going to be able to do it by Tool and sweated. This is not something that you can just pull himself up by his bootstraps prospered in others benefit from it. Why because the Lord was with Joseph. So you see that the Lord was with Joseph for until Jacob mentions it in his prophecy in chapter 49 as the only other time the name of Jehovah. I didn't say God because we go to the center point out. You meant it for evil, but God meant it for good with the name itself. Jehovah is not going to be here anymore in the rest of the book of until till taken. So as we get the Symmetry the Lord was with Joseph when he was under potiphar the Lord was with Joseph when he was in the in the prison. So that's really our first idea want you to notice the success of Joseph for the prosperity of Joseph or however you want it. However, you want to hang on to that and remember it and put that in contrast to the seduction of Joseph by Potiphar's wife because that's really the two main elements. But the focus I believe is on how Joseph Temptation by Parcels white because that sandwich right in between these two elements of prosperity. Are you with me? Do you see the Symmetry Prosperity under potiphar prosperity in the sandwich right in between that is how he dealt with the Temptation from Potiphar's wife. So as we think about Joseph himself that's been bought that buy some writers that he's really shouldn't consider him a type because it's not mentioned anywhere these guys that'll show you how we can make a type out of Joseph and do it in a way that I think honors God. I would point you to Baxter's explore the book. He does a good job in that he calls he can call attention to the fact that you can't do not make some certain connection between Joseph and Jesus when you look at at chapter 37 you see how he was favored by Jacob and then we think about Jesus Christ is the only begotten son of his father. He truly the Beloved son. He's created in the Revenant in filial honor Keys preeminent in Divine Purpose has has the father's message. That's a good summary.

Joseph was sold. Joseph was suffering Joseph in the end and intent and in figure Joseph was his father. rollington versus Jacob Joseph

What does that do in Potiphar's eyes and causes potiphar to say I'm going to put everything in his keeping because of its all turning to gold on this man. So you can even Joseph said nothing at this patch of sanctity of marriage goes all the way back to the Book of Genesis one man one woman one. That's the ideal. Now. We live in a broken world. We live in a fallen World understand that not everyone can make it through that unscathed and I want to tell you there's race there is great, but I'll tell you we're not talking. Graceful situation with a woman like Potiphar's wife know this is woman who is bent on Les and she is she is a messed-up woman in it, isn't it? Amazing that if you'd look at this parallel in the Egyptian time. How many thousands and thousands of years ago is this and get it reads like yesterday Jerry Springer.

appreciate it reads like last year or the year before has me two of them. I want to be careful because I know there are legitimate legitimate concerns with anyone who has done wrong and I am no nothing. No way. Am I just in line the sense of of Sinners who do bacon in the world, but it keep your nose clean like Joseph and it is, you know part of that me to that's just all accusation and there was no truth to the report that you're looking at the me to Egypt movement here with Potiphar's wife in a sense. And again, I want to be kind because there are legitimate cases that have been proven that people have done bitching hang of things and they need to Justice needs to be served with that. But I'll look at the other side of that when false accusations fly and there's no truth then there's no bleeding to it.

You think he's going to be able to make some appeal to a higher Court know that's. That settles it and can I tell you it's sad but as pastor of her divorce the reason you have to leave anything like 20/20 before divorce. Covered up in the headlines recently about the Roman Catholic church and all the cover up with the homosexuality in the pedophilia in all of that stuff. It just makes you want to vomit. We're told that potiphar is an officer of peyroux. The word officer is an interesting word to translate that's a good translation in all so it tells us he's the captain of the Guard we need that information. But when you do work study and you look up the word that's translated office you also see you also see it translated as eunuch. No, I don't know about the the policies and procedures of how a person becomes a eunuch in the days of Egypt. But I know that Daniel was a eunuch and his three friends had to be eunuchs because they served under under Cyrus and they served under the higher-ups and there was no threat no possibility. Now, let's just follow this group. Now you have this woman who's married to this man?

setting on how to put her in a position to be given to the west of her heart to want to look for somebody like Joseph. Not just fine cuz it's it's wrong. No matter how you look at it. But there are other commentator said mention Potiphar's probably very old and she's probably very young probably probably probably in the Bible who is bent on Joseph if she's been this way towards Joseph some commentators. I think it might have been even assume that this would be the first time that she do something like this. And so this probably isn't the first time that she's gone after somebody but this is the first time it stood out to her like this because of the rejection. She's going to face from Joseph Josephson in a tight spot. Everything is going well. And if he's going to stay in in good with honors pocket watch And now he's just trying to do his business and that's what the text says you look at it this in the passing of time came in to do his business. That's when you came to do his work is his daily tasks things that were commissioned to him his mission that he was on and in the middle of that here she comes and she's already been working on him day after day in the beginning. We see that she comes to Joseph and he's a trusted servant of properties as well. Not a servant. He's a slave in that sense. And so she sees him that he is goodly and he's a young man to be envied in a lot of ways because Scott's prospering him and he's got a certain wisdom about him and she just begins to be drawn to him. Maybe Potiphar's away and doing things for payroll or have to take care of work and now she's here and she's willing on this will Joseph has to resist her the first time and then there's a second time as well that yet. Is this the first time he resists her with words? And she comes in and makes her proposal and he lets her know just square up not going to do this because I'm number one. You're married to Waterford number to he's my boss and I'm loyal to him and I'm going to do what he's commissioned me to do and thirdly how can I do this and send against and he has a respect reverence and walk with God that has kept him out of this temptation in prison when you're close to the Lord like that at some of the best ammunition you have against sin against the Lord. Let's note that and let's let's take that part because it will do what God wants us to do something to do and you're going to serve liquor and that plow and if we're following Jesus the devil's going to lure us. Peter wants us to be sober be vigilant.

That's the devil's roaring. Lion walketh about seeking whom he may devour. And so we need that sobriety. We need that vigilance. And the best way to do that is to stay so close to Jesus that you know, you have the far look you look to the to the venous emu say, what is my my Jesus going to say in the end? Whether it's sexual and success has done more people then then then not having success. How many have gotten. So she doesn't she can't get him with just a full frontal assault. Okay, that didn't work. So what you going to do while the passage tells us how she just tried to wear it down and just seduce lower. It wasn't a day that passed.

Every day she's going to try to lure him and seduce him and wear him down and it wasn't until I make it over and over and over until I finally believe it. Well, she's working on Joseph here. It's not going to get through though.

I'm going to get through this interesting pattern that we can see today. Things that Christians would tolerate I said it. There are certain things as a believer in the word of God that friend you cannot tolerate. You just simply can't and not be not be where God wants you to be in the money. You can't tolerate soon. And so that's a big who's really the Intolerable Acts. well

But the Toleration we have I wonder if there are things that we give baby just to turn it turn a deaf ear to or in a week at today that 5 years ago 10 years ago thirty years ago 50 years ago. It's not going to work.

He's an officer of a robe. So Joseph's not even giving her the time of day to even go and be with her. So I think she's getting a little muffled at this because how dare this slave is Hebrew slave. How dare he treat me like this. He's not going to get away with that. So she's still laughing after Universe number 11. It came to pass about this time that Joseph went into the house to his business and there was none of the man of the house there with you still got to where they wouldn't know that Joseph was in there when they're alone.

Interesting how that worked out, but she caught him by his girlfriend. She caught him he's going in to do his business is garment saying lie with me Garmin and Josh Duhamel

They get back within earshot she shows and I got proof preemptive on her part because Joseph got out and she's the one that she's probably a master at covering up things when we're in in the State of Affairs like that. So I wouldn't I wouldn't walk again seeing am resting or a physically she's accusing him of a physically touching her in a way that you shouldn't or something of that nature like that as well as it does bring forth the fact that she is accusing him of mocking the Egyptian people as a Hebrew as a slave. Putting in a pickle like this has to do something about Joseph and Joseph has won his trust Joseph, so I don't know. exactly, which side I would fall down on if it came down to have him to be dogmatic about it, but I would probably leaves were saying I think he was upset for good reason because Now he's got to do something with Joseph. He didn't really want to have to do that. So Joseph Master cooking.

A place where the king's prisoner bound and he was there in the prison. Acts that. You started with prosperity of Joseph has seen again prospers and he lost respect in the eyes of men but you kept respect in the eyes of God and he said out of a god rather than man in that regard. I don't care what anybody else thinks. I'm going to serve God and then God comes and visits him in prison. The Lord was with Joseph and showed him. Showed him Mercy. This is loving kindness of God in Jesus Christ in the throne of grace. And gave him favor spray sustained gave him favor in the sight of the key for the prison. So you had paid the same words in the keeper the prison and Hebrew the prison commit to Joseph and all the prisoners that were in the prison and whatsoever. They did their you would do rugged keep her the prison look naughty scuse me anything that was under his hand because I didn't hear it the three other times. It's been said the Lord was with him. And that would she did who made it to prosper was a Joseph's wet soil was it all this hard work? No friends across from the only way we're going to find good success is when the board makes it to prosper. Then it will break through the word success there in prosperity SC ideas breaking through where there seems to be no way it should be working now this is so if you want to see any reason your life where God showing up don't always count the numbers discuss Prosperity might not always come by the way of a of a big bank account or or you know, pull fuse or different things that Nature's Pastor wrestled that sometimes when we have more people come to our church. I think there's a lot of variable reasons a day in which we live factoring into that. We can I look at Broomfield Baptist Church and see God's Prosperity on what we've done here. If I were to say no, I'd be lying to go back to 2010 and we chartered this church and set sail on this vessel. I've seen God part areas and move things out of the way that otherwise would never happen. If God has prospered. I want to see more people coming absolutely but the word of God and all of its truth in all of its resting in in in all of its. I just wish more people Hungry for it and wanted what you are here tonight to enjoy with me and may we pray for the people of Broomfield in the surrounding areas that they would get hungry once again to get away from all entertainment all of the all of the seeming Prosperity that look successful in men's eyes, but in the end, I wonder how much will wind up. Let's follow the pattern of Joseph and no matter where if it's just us in the Lord and we're the only ones that know at least we've got Integrity with the Lord and we're going to put her hand to the plow in face knowing that one day he's going to use what we're doing to save many people alive. Not just with physical life. The goal is to save me people live with eternal life and if we didn't have in one day and find out that 50 years from now because somebody else went to Brookwood Baptist Church talk about Jesus Kate. There's nothing in that lets not negate the prosperity of the Lord. He will take his word and break Rocks Under there may be things that happened through what we do here that we never even get to hear or see and sew Joseph couldn't see all that prison.
