2 Samuel 7: “Greatness of the King”

Promise

This starts with David’s desire to show God’s greatness in building a house for Him.

God points out that He didn’t need or ask for this (vs5-7) and turns it around by promising to build a house for David (vs8-16).

God makes it clear what He has done and that He is going to make this happen.

God’s greatness isn’t shown by what people do for Him but in what He does for them.

Fulfillment

This promise was immediately fulfilled when David’s son was on the throne and built the temple (1 Kings 8:23-24).

The ultimate fulfillment of this promise was announced in Luke 1:30-33.

Jesus proved to be a king unlike any other (John 18:36).

Jesus victoriously rules over a kingdom with no limits of space or time.

Response

This didn’t happen because David was great but because God was.

We must turn away from self-rule to God’s-rule.

God alone should be praised because there is nothing better (vs22).

We must trust God, remembering that He is trustworthy (vs28).
