The Temptation of Jesus
4 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written,
“ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,
“ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’
and
“ ‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’
7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’
” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
9 And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan!
For it is written,
“ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.’
11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
The Jews had a saying: ‘The Holy One, blessed be his name, does not elevate a man to dignity till he has first tried and searched him; and if he stands in temptation, then he raises him to dignity.’
Now here is a great and uplifting truth.
What we call temptation is not meant to make us sin; it is meant to enable us to conquer sin.
It is not meant to make us bad, it is meant to make us good.
It is not meant to weaken us, it is meant to make us emerge stronger and finer and purer from the ordeal.
Temptation is not the penalty of being human, temptation is the glory of being human.
It is the test which comes to those whom God wishes to use.
6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
8 Though you have not seen him, you love him.
Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
We have to note further where this test took place.
It took place in the wilderness.
Between Jerusalem, on the central plateau which is the backbone of Palestine, and the Dead Sea there stretches the wilderness.
The Old Testament calls it Jeshimmon, which means the Devastation, and it is a fitting name.
It stretches over an area of thirty-five by fifteen miles.

8 Though you have not seen him, you love him.
Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
It is through our inmost thoughts and desires that the tempter comes to us.
His attack is launched in our own minds.
But the very power of the devil lies in the fact that he breaches our defences and attacks us from within.
He finds his allies and his weapons in our own inmost thoughts and desires.
We must always remember that again and again we are tempted through our gifts.
The person who is gifted with charm will be tempted to use that charm ‘to get away with anything’.
Those who are gifted with the power of words will be tempted to use their command of words to produce glib excuses to justify their own conduct.
The person with a vivid and sensitive imagination will undergo agonies of temptation that a more stolid person will never experience.
Those with great gifts of mind will be tempted to use these gifts for themselves and not for others, to control and not to serve others.
It is the grim fact of temptation that it is just where we are strongest that we must be forever on the watch.
God’s rescuing power is not something to be played and experimented with; it is something to be quietly trusted in everyday life.

1  How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
2  How long must I take counsel in my soul
and have sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?
3  Consider and answer me, O LORD my God;
light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,
4  lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”
lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.
5  But I have trusted in your steadfast love;
my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
6  I will sing to the LORD,
because he has dealt bountifully with me.
