Day of questioning continues
Day of questioning continues
Questions, questions and more questions, now the tables are turned and Jesus asks the question.
Jesus never misses opportunity to teach:
Silences questions about authority (Mk11:27-33)
Silences questions about taxes (Mk12:13-17)
Silences questions about resurrection (Mk12:18-27)
And silenced about greatest commandment (Mk12:28-34)
That leads us to the question that Jesus asks in our passage today. It would seem that the question is a conundrum that they could not answer.
35 And Jesus began to say, as He taught in the temple, “How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? 36 “David himself said in the Holy Spirit, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Until I put Your enemies beneath Your feet.” ’
37 “David himself calls Him ‘Lord’; so in what sense is He his son?” And the large crowd enjoyed listening to Him.
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
I think there are a couple of things we should look at, consider today as we look at the passage.

With a far more important question than the questions Jesus has previously silenced for answering this wrong is a matter of eternal life, or eternal damnation. (Mt22:42; Jn3:16-21; Jn8:24; 1Jn2:18-23)
In the Matthew parallel passage it says this.
24 asking, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies having no children, his brother as next of kin shall marry his wife, and raise up children for his brother.’
42 “What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?” They said to Him, “The son of David.”
They had the right idea on the Son don’t they? Answering the question rightly and believing in their heart and exampling in their lives would save them from eternal damnation.
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17 “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
18 “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 “This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.
20 “For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 “But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”
and add in
24 “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”
What is being implied here in 8:24?
If we were to read the passage in 1Jn2:18-23 you would see that this is the end times, the last hour and belief and what you do with belief matters. There are antichrists out there and you must believe in the Christ, don’t deny the Christ. I know that sounds basic, simple, but our actions can deny the Christ.

5 Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins, And faithfulness the belt about His waist.

It was a common Jewish belief prior to Jesus that the Messiah would be a descendant of David.

In the passage we can see that he is a royal descent of David, following the lineage of David through Solomon to Jesus.

Jesus was a descendant of David on both sides of His family, both mother and step-father.
The question given was not to cast doubt of the Christ being David’s son. They could not get it, comprehend it how the Christ could be both Son and Lord. Today we can know and do know that the Christ is both son of David and David’s Lord too.

Scripture clearly will show that Jesus, the Christ, is David’s Lord too. This fulfilling the prophesy of 2Sam7:11-12. But there is still more we can glean from scripture to help us with our understanding and maturing in Christ.

In one of the most quoted O.T. passages in the N.T. maybe we better look at the entire passage.
1 The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” 2 The Lord will stretch forth Your strong scepter from Zion, saying, “Rule in the midst of Your enemies.”

3 Your people will volunteer freely in the day of Your power; In holy array, from the womb of the dawn, Your youth are to You as the dew. 4 The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”

So we have that the Christ would be David’s Lord (Ps110:1-7); and He rules from right hand of God and is both king and priest forever. We know that He would be a Son, mighty God and who would be over a government with no end (Isa9:6-7) and that HE would be born in Bethlehem and would rule for eternity (Mic5:2).

Drawing a conclusion on this, in finishing up the conundrum posed by Jesus
The Christ is David’s son by His incarnation in the lineage of David
The Christ is David’s Lord by His eternal Deity
May we know, believe, and walk in the truth today that He be the master, Savior, Lord of our lives not just in word and deed but by heart and our very lives.
