Dull Hearers
1 For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:
2 Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.
3 And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.
4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.
5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;
8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
10 Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.
11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.
12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

This morning I preached a message entitled “Milk, Meat or Mush”

For a Sunday morning message, it was a little more of a meat message - dealing with believers who are not mature enough for anything beyond milk - and as a result of an apathetic attitude - we have a gospel that is not adorned in an appetizing or desireable way… it is more like mush - no desireablility
Tonight, we are going to tread into a topic that there is no way we will be able to exhaust in the next 3 hours, but we will do our best.

11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.
Here the Apostle - penman of this epistle - I believe it is Paul, but regardless, there were many things that he wanted to be able to share with the Hebrew people, but was unable to...
Observations:
It wasn’t because the penman could not explain it...
It wasn’t because the penman was unwilling to share these great truths of the faith...
It was because the people had become lax in their faith.-
It was because they had become dull hearers...
15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
9 And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
8 And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
13x’s in the bible, we have the phrase - “ears to hear”
22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
So who was this person - Melchisedec? and is he the one that Paul was unable to speak about because these hebrew people were dull of hearing???
Dull Hearers...
What a tragedy that these people missed out on all that they could have been taught - and it was because they were dull hearers...
17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s dale.
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
21 And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.
22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the Lord, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,
23 That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:
24 Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.

2 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;
3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.
4 Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.
5 And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:
6 But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises.
7 And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better.
8 And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.
9 And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham.
10 For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.
Now when we look at this passage of scripture - what we find is that Jesus is our High Priest -
Taken from among men - heb5.1-2
offer gifts
offer sacrifices
have compassion on
the ignorant - not a slam - people ignorant - unknowing of God’s ways
out of the way - outside the ways of God
compassed with infirmity -
Called of God heb5.5

7 I will declare the decree: The Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; This day have I begotten thee.
Office of the Priests were through the Levites -
Jesus was of the tribe of Judah -
The same authority that called Aaron - also Called Christ to be a Priest...
The High priestly position was handed down -

Christ - our High Priest
The One who has given us all things...
The One who has brought:
salvation
redemption
justification
adoption
We are the beneficiaries of all that God has for us and it is made available
Through the gifts and sacrifices of Christ
1 For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:

and SO MUCH MORE...
But if we are dull of hearing - we will miss the great truths and mysteries of God’s word in our own lives.
11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.
12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
