Introduction:

1. All Temptations We Face Are Common to Mankind

A. There are no new sins

Ecclesiastes 1:9 ESV
What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.

B. Take Comfort and Get Help from One Another

Galatians 6:1–2 ESV
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:1–2 ESV
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
1 Timothy 5:11 ESV
But refuse to enroll younger widows, for when their passions draw them away from Christ, they desire to marry

2. God Will Not Allow Us to Be Tempted Beyond Our Ability to Withstand

A. Resist the Devil

James 4:7 ESV
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

B. Fight the Flesh

James 1:13
James 1:13–15 ESV
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
Hebrews 12:4 ESV
In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.

C. Get Help from Christ

1
1 Timothy 5:14 ESV
So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, manage their households, and give the adversary no occasion for slander.
Hebrews 4:14–15 ESV
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
ESV Study Bible:

Even when Christians face morally confusing situations, they should never think that they have no options other than sinful ones. There will always be a morally right solution that does not require disobedience to any of God’s moral laws.

3. God Will Give You a Way of Escape

Practical Ways to Escape Temptation:
Change Your Thinking ()
Romans 12:2 ESV
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Don’t Meditate on Sin, Instead Focus on God
Example: Israelites at Mt. Sinai - It’s hard to sin focusing on the holiness of God
Resist the Devil and Take a Stand
1 Peter 5:8-
1 Peter 5:8–9 ESV
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
RUN!
Illustration: No one thinks you a coward when you run out of a burning building or run to a storm shelter when the sirens sound. No one thinks a person fleeing from an oncoming train is a coward. Why then should we consider a person to be a coward that is running from temptation that can cause way more damage than a natural disaster or calamity.
Conclusion:
Resist Sin with a Vengeance
