Guardian
6 times in 6 verses God is called our keeper, or guardian.
The song is emphatic as it posses its first question: “From where does my help come?”
My help comes from the LORD my guardian.
In his faithfulness we take comfort.
In 3 distinct verses our Psalm emphatically declares God is always on guard and attentive to us.
Look to the Hills
As you come over 80 headed west after a long journey, and as you leave Fernley your eyes begin to look for it.
As your speed slowly begins to creep up and you lean into the turns your eyes begin to lift looking for that first glimpse.
Where is she?
Mount Rose.
Finally when you catch a glimpse of that snow on the peak.
You know, at last, you are home.
You’ve made it your home.
So is the heart of the psalmist:
These hills are the foundation of our life.
The one fixed point of reference and comfort.
We too with all God’s people look to the hills as the foundation of our existence because on them the Lord watches over us.
He keeps us in covenantal promise and watches over us in faithfulness.
Moriah - Abraham & Isaac
May we walk in obedience with Abraham and wood-bearing Isaac to the lofty heights of sacrifice and deliverance.
Sinai - Law
May we sit at the foot of this Holy mount as we wait on the Lord’s counsel and rule.
Horeb & Sinai: To see the glory of God -Elijah & Moses
May we walk in awe of the majesty of your glory, both in humility and comfort.
Wilderness temptation
As our Lord ascended the high mount and cleaved the lie of that ancient foe with the keen word of Deuteronomy.
May the sword of the Spirit the very Word of God, never leave our hand.
Sermon on the mount
As He pronounced
May I always be counted among them.
Transfiguration
May we with Peter and the sons of thunder contemplate your wonder.
Golgotha
May my help always come from forlorn Golgotha, the place of my rescue and redemption.
Great Commission
May my feet be readied with the eleven on the mount where our Lord calls us to mission to make disciples of all peoples.
John’s Revelation
May we be filled with hope and elation.
For this is the final Israel whose guardian never sleeps nor slumbers, and until that day may our eyes always be lifted to these hills from where our help comes.
