It may sound like I got the nouns transposed in the title of this sermon, but I did not make a mistake.
God sent Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt, which was a tremendous undertaking.
But, the more difficult task was getting Egypt out of the hearts of the Israelites.
I) Getting Israel out of Egypt
Pharaoh was unwilling to allow the Israelites to leave, perhaps fearing they would return to plunder, but certainly unwilling to give up the slave labor they represented -
Moses was hesitant, but God gave him signs and confirmation of His will to release His people -
The ten plagues that strike Egypt convince Pharaoh of the power of God and he temporarily agrees to allow the Israelites to leave -
But, he soon changes his mind and traps them against the Red Sea, where God delivers them - ,
Israelites witnessed all of these things and rejoiced at their salvation –
II) Yet, Israel kept wanting to return
When they became hungry shortly after crossing the Red Sea, they wanted to return –
When Moses spent a long time on Mount Sinai, they again wanted to return to Egypt – ;
When they came to the border of Canaan, they again wanted to return to Egypt – ,
Yet, contrast this with the attitude of Moses – – he made the determination to leave Egypt, especially in his heart
III) What is your Egypt?
Paul uses God’s words to Israel to describe our relationship –
Like Lot’s wife, do we have difficulty fully leaving the world?
– ,
It may not be an addiction, as we consider them, but it is something that we care so much about that we don’t want to walk away –
What regrets do we have, or what successes do we celebrate?
They reveal where our hearts truly lie –
Concl: The people who left Egypt in body, never left it in spirit.
So, they all died in the wilderness and God gave the promised land to their children.
If we cannot leave the world in spirit, God will give the promise to another – .
