INTRO:

LIFE in the Spirit

Paul says that the law, the Old Testament laws which the Jewish people kept, served to show us all how we are sinful and how we are in need of help. in fact the law will show us the outline or the permitter of sin and death, so that we have a consciousness about when we sin, we are aware of our failure to follow God’s righteous law, it is this law that makes us aware.
Now what the law was powerless to do, namely save us, God did by sending his son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be the final offering for sin
The flesh governed mind, living by the appetites and reasoning of this world.
Where you set your mind your life your body will follow.
You don’t have to strain to be like Christ you just have to surrender
Your mind governed by the spirit. Life and Peace
Ask God to give His mind, to think as He would have you think.
V. 1 In Christ =’s no condemnation this is relational
Feelings vs. Facts
We are more than justified, we are fully exonerated. Feelings of gloom and despair from time to time but not condemned.
Freed from the powers of sin and death
v. 4 walking not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit
Sin battles the Holy Spirit
sin disguises itself in the flesh
Thinking we are in control sin rules us. The malignant power.
Romans 8:2–3 NIV
because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh,
LAW
‘Law of sin and death’ an operating principle v. 2
As Mosaic law ‘powerless’ v. 3
the law of the Spirit and life the Holy Spirit working in us, when we are freed from sin.

God does not condemn Christians; instead through Christ Jesus [see 6:23] the life-giving Spirit has freed you from Sin and Death

GRAVITATIONAL PULL
Spirit or Self
friendships, habits, patterns of life, decisions
At just the right distance to support human life the sun sends out a force we call gravity. it is what kept on your bed over night, or on the floor if you had a rough time.
You did not order it, we don’t turn it on or off. it works without our having anything to do with it.
in the same way the people you hang around are going to pull you into their orbit. the friendships you make are going to influence much of what you do. they can be a positive influence or a negative influence. Now in much the same way Paul says the principle, or the gravity force of the Holy Spirit gives us life, and sets us free from the principle or the force of sin and death.
v. 3 flesh the entire human person
‘likeness’ does not mean disguise or copy
Christ is was human as we are only without sin
Christ Condemned sin, he destroyed it’s enslaving death dealing power
Sin is stripped of it’s power, dethroned, Sin is dead
v. 4 explains the purpose
‘righteous requirement’ what the law required
conformity to the will and character of God, is fully met

He became Flesh that we might receive the Spirit! Raised by the power of the Spirit and exalted to the right hand of God, he has poured out his Spirit on believers that we might also share his resurrection glory (8:11; 2 Cor 1:22; Eph 1:13–14).

1 Corinthians 1:30 NIV
It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.

Christ fulfilled the Law for us that it might be fulfilled in us.

Chp. 7 living according to the flesh is possible for believers
Making it impossible not to sin.
Under grace it is possible not to sin our freedom is to say no to sin and yes to God
In chp 7, 3 times Paul mentions indwelling sin
In chp 8, 3 times Paul mentions the indwelling Spirit
