Main idea: The LORD God graciously renews and restores those who cry for mercy.

Ex: The prodigal son - The son repent and comes home- The father -son encounter - Son confused -overwhelmed about the Father’s mercy.

There was another son… more about him later - It is tale of two one who repents and is renewed and restored and one who does not repent but this is ultimately a story a Fathers mercy.

7 reality - Though in Christ and free from enslaving me, there is still a war within me and sometimes I blow it!

From David to me - this is our common experience

Here one thing I want us to grab from this section of Ps. 51.

The fleeting pleasures of sin have made him joyless and peace-less and he cannot fix it.

He is the King and the “world” is at his command but joy & peace is not and it will not answer when he calls it.

(Calling some else’s dog)

Sin has built a barrier and no earthly power can knock it down, But God!!

Good news!

God the Judge intervenes - He confronts David in his sin and he becomes aware that when he sinned God was watching and that sin it was against him.

We see in Psa 51 David response - Confessing His sin & Crying out for mercy

What is confession?

Confession = ”to say the same thing”

Lawson - Confession is agreeing with God about our sin.

It also involves Repentance, or a turning away from sin confessed, no longer embracing it.

Ok, We agree with God & We cry out to him for mercy, for forgiveness, but what does it look like when he applies it into our lives and what is the effect if we don’t repent, if we don’t cry out for His renewing and restoring grace in our lives?

David Prays to the Lord God for the Application of God’s Renewing and Restoring Grace

Last week 4 imperatives: Have mercy -Blot out -Wash me - Cleanse me

The Chief imperative - Have Mercy! - Psalm 51:1

Is David demanding something from God? - Radical dependency -

These are the ingredients, as it were, of mercy - Mixing mortar/thinset - Water & bag of mortar - no water no mortar.

Open the bag and pour the power on the floor.

All of us may very well be or will be at one time in our lives at one of these imperatives.

Seven Faith-filled imperatives David knew he needed from the Lord

1- Purge me - V. 7 [QUICK WITH THIS POINT]

V. 1b-2 - from sin

V. 7 - Purge - root word is sin = de-sin me

Hyssop = applicator - It would be dipped in blood and sprinkled 7 times on a leper at the altar - Lev. 14:6

You don’t throw paint on the wall it must be applied

Two images or picture: leprosy & the passover

Sin is spiritual leprosy - grows and gets worse and you can’t stop it.

It isolates you and then destroys you piece by piece.

“I shall be” = faith & confidence in the Lord’s ability

Ex. 12:7-13 - Hyssop used to put blood on the doorpost so judgement might passover their home.

2- Wash me [QUICK WITH THIS POINT]

The negative: A failure to repent has caused a “set in” stain

Ex: Child gets a stain on his shirt at church or school and doesnt tell you.

The dangerous sin on non repentance

The positive The Lord can remove it

V. 7b - wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

“I shall be” - renewed confidence - faith

Isa 1:18- whiter than snow

3- Let me rejoice - V. 8 [SLOW DOWN]

Let me hear

The negative: A failure to repent has cost him his joy and gladness

The positive The Lord can restore my hearing!

I can hear the song!

Ex: a failed relationship - love song yuck!

No voice could revive his dead joys but that which brings the dead to life.

Pardon from God would give him double joy—joy and gladness.

Let my body rejoice

The psalmist has felt the results of sin in his physical body

Sin and a lack of repentance causes physical, mental and emotional pain and misery

Could this be why were so highly medicated, we stay in our sin and medicate the misery?

Ps. 32:1-2;11- Joy and gladness will be the result of forgiveness Let me rejoice

4- Blot out - V. 9

V. 1 - “blot out my transgressions”

Erase

Hide your face - Ps 143:7

“Hide” -generally used to show a withholding of God mercy or a giving of justice.

Give justice to my sin, not me!

Hide your face from my sin but do not hide your face from me.

Time does not restore or renew Christ does.

David’s face was ashamed with looking on his sin, and no diverting thoughts could remove it from his memory, but he prays the Lord to do with his sin what he himself cannot.

Imagine David at the funeral of Uriah?

David saw his sin in every meeting with Joab, every time he sat with Bathsheba, When he saw his child’s grave.

The negative: A failure to repent has cost him his freedom by the constant reminder of his sin.

= Misery!

(Shame slapping obedience - may make them feel guilty but it cannot bring joy)

The positive The Lord will remove it from his record and in so doing remove his guilt and shame

If mercy is the chief imperative in this psalm then Create is the heart imperative of this Psalm

5- Create in me - V. 10 [SLOW DOWN]

The word that begins this section is the Hebrew verb bara, which is used in Genesis 1 for the creation of the heavens and the earth by God.

Bara is the word David uses in verse 10 of the psalm, where he asks God to “create” a pure heart in him.

Derek Kidner writes, “With the word create he asks for nothing less than a miracle.”

He desires what only God can provide.

“Renew” = to make new or to be new or to restore to newness

Davids action cost him something he could not get back.

- Lord in your mercy renew me!

In Brokenness the we need God to do a creative work not only for our past failures but for our future lives

Sin and failure should not confine or define us but bring us to a point of dependency so we might be renewed and restored.

David desire what he’s never had - a steadfast heart

32:37-41

6- Cast me not away - V. 11

Holy Spirit in OT used only here and Isa 63:10-11 - Significant Bible truth- God’s spirit with/in man.

What does this mean? 3 views

loss of salvation

loss of the kingdom

Loss of the presence, power of God and the loss of the ability to be used by him.

The idea of God removing the Holy Spirit from someone comes from the account of God’s withdrawal of his blessing from King Saul

David is not talking about eternal security or the fear of losing his salvation at all.

He is only acknowledging that he is unable to live a holy life without God.

Therefore, he needs the help and power of the Holy Spirit every single moment if he is to be able to overcome temptation and follow after godliness.
