Intro

What comes to mind when you hear that word?
Death, starvation, suffering, loss, misery, desiese, pestalence.
Terrible images comes to mind of people, nothing but skin over bones.
Whern famine strikes a country - thats the end of many things. If there is a famine there is no growth.
If there is a fam ine there is no joy.
If there is a famine there is no peace and contentment.
If there is a famine there no no sounds of laughter and rejoytcing, only sounds of weeping and mourning.
Famnine may very well be the worst of all desisters to come upon a group of people.
So the words of God in our test should scare the living day lights out of us:
Amos 8:11a ESV
11 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord God, “when I will send a famine on the land— not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.
And so when you hear those words your hearts should sink, your kness should grow weak and fear should grip your heart.
Because as we have seen famine is the end of hope.
The problem that we face regarding this famine is sheer complacency. Israel did not heed this waring, yea right they said. And the same is true today.
But this is not a normal famine...
Amos 8:11b ESV
11 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord God, “when I will send a famine on the land— not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.
What kind of styrange famine is this?
There is be a famine, but there will be no shortage of water or of food - that does not sound very “faminy” at all.
So if there will be no shortage of water and no shortage of food - then what will be in shortage? What will there be a severe lack of?
What is going to be so scarce trhat peole will:
Amos 8:12e ESV
12 They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the Lord, but they shall not find it.
people will wonder from one side of the land to the other looking for it. That word wonder, means to walk to without a destination in mind.
Its an aimless, purposless, goalless, meaningless existance.
A judgment worse food shortage. A state worse than deydration.
What is this thing that is in short supply that brings such hoplessness to people?
Amos 8:11–12 ESV
11 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord God, “when I will send a famine on the land— not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. 12 They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the Lord, but they shall not find it.

The Word of God

Notice - there is not a famine of the actual Word itself - the bible remains the best seeling book of all time. The famine is that no one will want to hear what it says.
And so extention - do what it says and beleiev what it says.
And so you end up with people who will one day expereince the terrible situation Jesus described:
Matthew 7:22–23 ESV
22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
“Lawlesness” those without the law of God.
This is a dire situation. Jesus said:
Matthew 4:4 ESV
4 But he answered, “It is written, “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”
All of the consequnces of a natural famine exists in this famine.
In the same way that life is not possible without physical sustinace, physical life is not possible without the daily bread of God’s word.
Without the Word There can be no growth, no joy, no peace, no laughter, no rejoycing.
Pestalence always follows famine - famine leaves people weak, and the lack of water makes sanitation impossible.
In the same way: Fear always follows a spiritual famine.
If there is a famine of hearing the Word, then there will be a severe lack of faith and an increase of fear because:
Romans 10:17 ESV
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
You can tell there is a famine by the amont of suffering, you can tell there is a famine oif the word by the amount of fear.
Psalm 94:19 ESV
19 When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul.
1 Kings 19:4–6 ESV
4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.” 5 And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, “Arise and eat.” 6 And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again.
God wants to tell each of you: Arise and Eat.
Psalm 119:103 ESV
103 How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
1 Peter 2:2 ESV
2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—
Let us pray:
Matthew 6:11 ESV
11 Give us this day our daily bread,
