Introduction
Oh, the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus
Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus
Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free
Rolling as a mighty ocean
In its fullness over me

Atonement
It was now about the sixth hour - This is about noon.
The Jews divided the day into twelve hours.
These hours were computed from about six in the morning until six in the evening.
The first hour corresponds to our 7 A.M., the second to 8 A.M., the third to our 9 A.M. (Mt 20:3.
Mk 15:25.
Ac 2:15.
◐23:23), the fourth hour to our 10 A.M., the fifth to our 11 A.M., the sixth to our noon (Mt 20:5.
27:45.
Mk 15:33.
Lk *23:44n.
Jn 4:6.
19:14.
Ac 10:9), the seventh hour to our 1 P.M. (Jn 4:52), the eighth to our 2 P.M., the ninth to our 3 P.M. (Mt 20:5.
27:45, 46.
Mk 15:33, 34.
Lk *23:44n.
Ac 3:1.
10:3, 30), the tenth hour to our 4 P.M. (Jn 1:39), the eleventh hour to our 5 P.M. (Mt 20:6, 9), the twelfth hour to our 6 P.M.
At this time, which is 12:00 P.M. , Jesus has been hanging on the cross about three hours.
He was crucified in the morning about 9:00 A.M.
And there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour - During this time from from the sixth hour (noon) to the ninth hour (three o’clock) there was no light.
All of the sudden, in the middle of the day, there was no light.
This reality is very difficult for us to comprehend.
We are nearly in complete darkness.
There was no sun shining, no stars shining, no electricity, no torches or oil lamps (nobody would have these prepared in the middle of the day).
It was complete, utter and thick darkness.
One would not have been able to see his or her hand held right in front of the face.
And there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour
This darkness covered the entire realm.
It is not clear from the language whether this was a world-wide phenomenon or regional.
There are instance when writers use all-inclusive language in an exaggerated manner.
I believe it is safe to say that from this vantage point, the world was dark as the eye could see.
While the sun’s light failed - The only explanation from Luke concerning the darkness is that the sun’s light stopped, ceased, or was relinquished.
There have been many to argue that this was an eclipse that just so happened to occur at this time.
However, this theory as an explanation fall shorts, since Passover occurs during the full moon.
This reality makes that eclipse idea, because it is impossible for there to be one during the full moon.
Why did this darkness occur?
Is
Isaiah
Amos 8:9
The darkness is representative of the wrath of God in judgment.
John MacArthur writes, “What’s happening here is divine wrath is being poured out in its final form.
Eternal wrath is about to be released and the darkness is everywhere.
You could say it another way.
God brought hell to Jerusalem that day.
, verse 12; , verse 13; , verse 30, Jesus calls hell “outer darkness,” the ultimate black hole where there’s weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth in the eternal, unrelieved blackness.
It is the darkness of God’s judgment presence.
So from noon to 3:00, hell came to Jerusalem and Judea.
God showed up in wrath, and the interesting thing is it wasn’t wrath on the Romans, and it wasn’t wrath on the Jewish leaders, and it wasn’t wrath on the people; it was wrath on the Son.
God unleashed the full extent of His fury on Jesus Christ.
As Isaiah put it in , “Wrath with fierce anger.”
Hell came there.
What is hell?
Hell is where God punishes people forever.
Hell is where God pours out His fury on people forever.
God is the power behind the punishment in hell.
When you say that hell is being separated from God, only in the sense of His comforting presence, not in the sense of His punishing presence.
He is the one who destroys both soul and body in hell.
He is the King of hell, Satan is not.
And God, who is the punisher of all the souls in eternal hell, shows up in the darkness of Calvary to punish His Son, and He gives His Son eternal hell on behalf of all who would ever believe.”

And the curtain of the temple was torn in two - There were at minimum thirteen curtains in the temple, however this is a reference to THE curtain of the temple.
The curtain identified by Luke is the curtain to the Holy of Holies.

It is not a foregone conclusion that the earthquake tore the curtain in the temple.
Matthew is emphatic in saying the curtain was ripped from the top to the bottom into two separate pieces.
I believe the language is too specific to describe what would occur during an earthquake.
I conclude that God in heaven tore the curtain with his mighty power.
Why?
This is the end of the temple and the priesthood.
They are now completely obsolete.
Practical Application
