Throughout the OT, the rock speaks of God and not man (Deu_32:4, Deu_32:15; Dan_2:45; Psa_18:2).

The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

Jesus said, “That thou art Peter (petros, a small rock), and upon this rock (petra, a large rock foundation) I will build My church” (Mat_16:18 3, NIV; see 1Co_3:1).

ความชัยชนะของคริสตจักร The Victory of the Church

This is a reference to the fact that the “Church” as an institution will be victorious with Christ.

Institution - God made the Family (Adam & Eve), Form of Worship (Killed the sheep to make a covering for Adam and Eve), and Government (When Noah came out of the Ark).

When we speak of the (family or government,) we do not think of only one, but we recognize the idea behind it…so it should be with the church.

At the time Jesus was teaching the disciples, They were walking towards Ceasarea Philippi and would have passed what is known as the gates of hell/hades. It was a place that was wholly given to worship of false gods by the gentile people of that area. The god “Pan.”

They would put the sacrifice, or the blood of the sacrifice into the pool of water in the Cave and if it disappeared, it was accepted.

The point is simply this, Sin, Death, Hell and the Grave have no power over those who are in Christ! AMEN!!

1 Corinthians 15:54-58

A. The rock is Jesus Christ.

Christ said so (Mat_21:42) referring to Isa_28:16. Peter himself said so (1Pe_2:4-8; Act_4:11-12 with Psa_118:22). Paul names Christ as the Rock in 1Co_10:4 and calls Christ the Head of the church (Eph_1:20-23; Eph_4:8-16; Eph_5:23; Col_1:18). Throughout the OT, the rock speaks of God and not man (Deu_32:4, Deu_32:15; Dan_2:45; Psa_18:2). Jesus said, “You are Peter (petros, a small rock), and on this rock (petra, a large rock foundation) I will build My church” (Mat_16:18 3, NIV; see 1Co_3:1).

B. The keys.

The keys mentioned here refer to Peter’s stewardship in the kingdom. These are not the keys to the church, but the keys of the kingdom.

They are not the keys to death or eternity, for Christ holds those (Rev_1:18).

In the Bible, “keys” stand for authority and stewardship (Isa_22:22; Luk_11:52).

Peter used these keys when he “opened the door of faith” (Act_14:27) to

The keys were not just for Peter as it was Philip that started this in Samaria.

Cornelius sent messengers to Peter. Peter saw the vision of the sheet with all the animals and God telling him to kill them and eat. Even the unclean animals, something a Jew would NEVER do.

Is there something God is asking you or I to do that is against what we would do as a Thai, Canadian, Filippino?

This is stewardship, not lordship.

Binding and loosing.

Peter never claimed to be a Pope (see 1Pe_5:1-4). Note that Christ, not Peter, builds the church. This is the first mention of “church” in the NT.

This implies applying God’s Word to people. In this is used of church discipline, and the power is given to all the disciples, not Peter alone. In Jesus’ day, the Jews spoke of “binding and loosing” when a rabbi would forbid something or permit something. The church does not tell heaven what to do, but obeys on earth what heaven commands the church to do!

What is it that God has told us to do?

Follow Him

Love & Obey Him

Love one another enough to provoke to love and good works… . A Christian who is living in sin should know that you:

Love them

Want what is Best for them

And will speak the truth to them

Christ now openly announced His coming suffering and death. He had intimated His death in various symbols in Joh_2:19, Joh_3:14, Joh_6:51, and Mat_9:15 and Mat_12:40-41; but now He spoke of it openly (Mar_8:32). Of course, the disciples were shocked at the news, especially Peter, who repeated Satan’s temptation of Mat_4:8-10 by trying to detour Christ from the cross. Satan was obviously using Peter to be a stumbling block in Christ’s path of obedience. Satan was to use Peter again to hinder Christ’s work (Luk_22:31). Christ rebuked Peter and then taught the disciples the importance of the Cross in the life of the believer. “Bearing the cross” means dying to self, bearing Christ’s reproach, and crucifying the world and the flesh as we follow Him in obedience. Peter was to learn that suffering and glory always go together (1Pe_4:12-19; 1Pe_5:1, 1Pe_5:10).
