Cleansing the Temple

John 2:13–22 ESV
The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking about the temple of his body. When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
John 2
3 feasts required attendance in Jersualem
Probably have to buy offering and pay to have it inspected
Temple was the big bank (Federal Reserve) of the day. Place where wealthy could keep money
Temple Shekel (scrip)
Money changing necessity because of people of everyland. Price gouging was the problem
Selling animals. You could buy outside of temple but it was usually rejected beucase it had to be inspected. The doves could be 15 x more in temple than outside
Leviticius was there to teach them between the holy and profane the Jews forgot this. We need a Holy Ghost filter
Things we watch everyday life: For Jews this was pots, clothes, food. Still follows somewhat we dress modest, dont eat food offered to idols
Pushing the Gentiles out of worship. Why there must be order and reverance in service. Free of distractions.
The anger of Jesus different from the persepctive most people thing of him
Not made with hands
The temple was to be a new temple . Just like solomon’s could not hold God. The body of Jesus “gave up the Ghost” for the whole world. We are new temple who may need cleansing.
We are temple
Need Cleansing
Keep knowledge of common and holy
Keep zeal for the things of God (include anger of sin, passion for ministry and helping others, desire of spiritual exercise). Radical zeal full dedication not shallow like verses 23-25 who followed only for things they experienced with no long term committment
(Get the zeal back Let the Dove Free)
Gentiles couldn’t worship anywhere else. This was to be the part that was for all nations. Animals in the place of worship instead of on teh outside
Jesus used whip for animals not people
Angry about sin not personal issues. Last time you were angry about sin
Zeal for my father’s house. Have you lost the burning passion?
Zeal is a radical following of Christ
Maybe you need a temple cleansing from Jesus
Set the dove free
Maybe you allowed things in under a good pretense: Jobs necessary but replace the call of God in some people l
The dove set free
They ask him for a sign. This is part of his Messianic calling because Messiah would restore proper worship. Also Zecharaiah alludes to a day when there would be no traders in the house of the Lord
He spoke of his body as the temple, We are the temple***Spring board for life application***
John 2:23–25 ESV
Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.
John
Looking at signs instead of trusting his words
Shallow faith/Amazement at gifts: Contrast with Nathaniel or Thomas which resulted in a confession as the Lord. Perhaps they thought him earthly Messiah and not divinity
Not full dedication
