Who were we before Christ? Before his work on the cross?
And the answer is simple - we were slaves to our passions immorality.
5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices
And we would have put trapped in our sins, if Christ had not died for us.
In the last few weeks we have been talking about our bondage and slavery to sin
When we talk about Christ as our Savior -
It is not just that Christ saved us from the wrath and judgement of our sins.
But he saved us from our selves - the passions of our sin.
Passions that Paul has called our slave master who put us in bondage.
Passions that in the last weeks
But with Christ, and his death,
- We are emancipated from our slavery to sin.
6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.
I don’t want to beat a dead horse.
But communion is an act of worship, remembrance, and self-reflection.
I think it is instructive for us to think about the freedom Christ bought on the cross.
I want you to think about what you would be like if Christ had not set you free.
And what your life is because he set you free.
For the next few minutes,
- I ask you to meditate on the reality of your former life,
- and consider what great freedom we have in Christ.
So that in a few minutes - when we take up communion we can remember and worship the freedom Christ bought us on the cross.

As a church, we practice Close communion.
As a church, we practice Close communion.
That means if you are a believer, baptized, and a member of our church or a church of like faith you may partake in the communion.
If you are not a believer or a member of a like-minded church we ask that you let the bread and cup pass by you.
As well, we as members should also examine our lives and make sure there is no major sin in our lives that should be dealt with first.
It is better to take time to deal with our sin than take the communion cup with a major sin in our lives.
Bread
In the manner that Jesus called us to, We shall take up the bread. The bread represents the body of Jesus that was crucified on the cross for the forgiveness of sins. As we take up the bread may we examine our hearts and meditate on Christ’s crucifixion.

In Remembrance of Christs bodily death for sins you may eat the bread.
Blood
In the manner that Jesus called us to, We shall take up the cups of juice. The juice represents the blood of Jesus spilled upon Calvary. The blood that bought the forgiveness of sin. As we take up the juice may we mediate on the spilled blood of Jesus Christ?
