What is calling?

What does it mean to be called?
To be called means to be chosen and selected to accomplish a task or job.
A lot of great stories and adventures begin with a character being called to do something.
Frodo Baggins from Lord of the Rings was CALLED to take the ring to Mordor and defeat Sauron.
Luke Skywalker was CALLED to be a Jedi and bring balance to the force.
Peter Parker was CALLED to use his powers as Spider-man for good by his uncle.
You may have been CALLED by your momma to clean your room.
In the Bible… [Story about Samuel]
These stories start with someone being chosen, given a job, and called to do it. What would have happened if these people didn’t accept their calling? That’s right, absolutely nothing. Their lives wouldn’t have changed at all. They wouldn’t accomplish the task they were called to. They would not have fulfilled their purpose.

Called to what?

In the Bible passage we’re looking at tonight, Paul talks about a call.
He says to the church,

Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God.

So what is this call? This call is salvation. Paul says that those who are Christians following Jesus are CALLED to it.
Earlier in Ephesians, Paul says “for by grace you have been saved, not of your own works”. This means that salvation is not something we can achieve on our own. It is an act of God! It takes God to call us to salvation, we can’t do it on our own. God chooses those

Live Greater (be the Church)

Paul says in this verse to “lead a life worthy of your calling”. What does this mean?
It means that if you have been called by God to salvation, you need to act like it! When you are a Christian, it is a part of your calling to live differently, and to live for something greater. Paul lists several ways a Christian is supposed to live differently. His point is though, that Christians are supposed to be a part of the Church.
So what is the church? Better yet...
What is the Church NOT?
...

2 Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. 3 Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.

7 However, he has given each one of us a special gift through the generosity of Christ.

11 Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ.

13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.

14 Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth.

15 Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. 16 He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

Be a part of something greater!

There are some of you here who are not saved. Some of you who have not recognized your sin problem, or you refuse to recognize it. There are some of you who have chosen to reject God and not listen to this message. Jesus Christ died for you to have the opportunity to be connected to God and turn to Him. He paid the price that you could not pay. You have two options. You can continue to reject God and live the life that you want to live. Or you can turn to Him, ask to be a part of His chosen, and live the amazing life that God has for you.
If you simply reject God, then it probably doesn’t seem like He will call you, does it? I beg you, don’t reject Him. He loves you, and He wants you to be a part of His family. He has an amazing life for you that you can live, you need to take that step toward Him.
