The late Dr. John B. Geisel, director of the Southard School the psychiatric school for children conducted by the Menniger brothers in Topeka, Kansas, in summarizing his views on the psychological need of children for discipline and the psychological harm resulting from an atmosphere of license, said, “The child has a need within himself to live according to certain standards, to live a well-disciplined life, because:  (l) he gets a feeling of security if he knows where his limits are and then lives according to these limits; (2) as he lives according to his limits and freedom, he has less cause to feel guilty for having broken them, or for having been confused about them; (3) as he lives according to the rules and regulations, he gives parents many opportunities for praise, which in turn stimulates him to continue his orderly behavior; and (4) it is ego-bolstering for the child to accomplish what is required of him.”

Children who have received discipline form their parents with the following characteristics rarely, if ever, engage in delinquent behavior.
