Pastor/Teacher

Ephesians 4:11 NKJV
And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,
Our study today brings us to the final pillar in the foundation of the church
Pastors and Teachers
While many Pastors ar teachers not all teachers are Pastors
In the Biblical Holy land, the dryness of the ground made it necessary for flocks of sheep and cattle to move about during the dry season and stay in isolated areas far from the safety of the masters dwelling!
It was a serious job in view of threats of wild beasts, robbers, invaders.
At times the owner himself performed the job
Luke 15:6 NKJV
And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’
Many times hired hands
John 10:12 NKJV
But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them.
Already we can see the relationship of the Christian to his Master!
We are all far alway from the Master’s property
The sheep need feed, protected, cared for, for we are all presently far from our Master’s property grazing in hostile territory
Hebrews 11:8–10 NKJV
By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
So God has appointed men to watch over the flock of his people protecting them from ravenous wolves attempting to attack them
The description of Satan
1 Peter 5:8 NKJV
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
Acts 20:25–31 NKJV
“And indeed, now I know that you all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, will see my face no more. Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God. Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears.
Enter the teacher!
Here we find those with the gift of dissection and presentation!
The job of the Shepherd is not an easy one, it involves danger, commitment, sacrifice, and hard work
Sheep can be mean, dirty, obstinate, stubborn and strong-willed
But just as the Good Shepard love us, the Pastor loves those given into his care
The teacher - literally “school master” to whom the young are entrusted for elementary teachiung
One who has progressed to a mastery level of his specific craft
2 Timothy 2:15 NKJV
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
It implies a systematic instruction developing skills already present leading to mastery through practice and performance
Romans 12:3 NKJV
For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
To each of us is given a measure of faith - that faith can be developed through study and application of the principles of the Word of God
“The stress falls solely and simply on the presence of systematic instruction or on its effects.”
Socrates said “My aim is to draw the whole man out of an existence which was primarily intellectual and to prepare him for consciously moral action”
He totally rejected pure intellectualism!
He refused to be called “teacher” knowing that it wasn’t his job to reproduce himself and his beliefs but to point the way to morality without which intellectualism is an “empty basket”
Intellectualism did not drive morality! Morality drove intellectualism!
Hebrews 6:1 NIV
Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God,
Grow up!
Socrates knew that life was more than the some of man’s intellectual exercises!
He just didn’t know the author of life!
The teachers job is to take the seeds of faith planted in our hearts and water them with His Word so that they grow and produce fruit for the Kingdom!
The fruit we are talking about is the practice of the gifts God has placed within you!
