lass=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'>Eph 4:1 - I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,Worthyξίως axíōs;adv, from áxios (514), worthy. Worthily, suitably, properly (Rom. 16:2; Eph. 4:1; Phil. 1:27; Col. 1:10; 1 Thess. 2:12; 3 John 1:6). Verb: axióō (515), to esteem.

Vocation - 2821. κλσις klé̄sis; gen, klé̄seōs, fem. noun from kaléō (2564), to call. A call, invitation to a banquet. In the NT metaphorically, a call, invitation to the kingdom of God and its privileges, i.e., the divine call by which Christians are introduced into the privileges of the gospel

  • The fact that we are Christians should cause us to have a different way of living our lives than the unsaved – we are called to live holy lives – 1 Pet 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy
  • In the 23rd Psalm our Lord says vs 3 he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake  - once we are in God’s family God has an interest in how we live

Eph 4:17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind

Vanity - 3153 ματαιότης [mataiotes /mat·ah·yot·ace/] n f, From 3152; Three occurrences; AV translates as “vanity” three times. 1 what is devoid of truth and appropriateness. 2 perverseness, depravity. 3 frailty, want of vigour.

  • After the lead off emphasis on how to walk there is a contrast of how not to walk, and there is a specific list of examples of the unsaved ways

WHAT DOES GOD MEAN BY THESE STATEMENTS?

  1. Understanding is darkened
  2. Blindness of their hearts
  3. Past feeling –

EPH 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

LOVE - 26 γάπη [agape /ag·ah·pay/] n f, From 25; 116 occurrences; AV translates as “love” 86 times, “charity” 27 times, “dear” once, “charitably + 2596” once, and “feast of charity” once. 1 brotherly love, affection, good will, love, benevolence. 2 love feasts.

  • Notice the call to imitate Christ with or lives – God has a desire that we do great things with or lives, not for ourselves, but for Him.
  • What verses come to mind when we talk about the sacrifice that Christ made for our salvation?

EPH 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

  • Once we are saved, God wants us to walk, act, think, live, talk, etc… like His children, not like the world.  Notice the warning in verse five –
  • Notice the “were” and the “now” – you couldn’t say these things if it was possible to be saved today, unsaved tomorrow and then saved again the day after that…

EPH 5:15-16 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Circumspectly - 199 κριβς [akribos /ak·ree·boce/] adv, From the same as 196; gk209; Five occurrences; AV translates as “diligently” twice, “perfect” once, “perfectly” once, and “circumspectly” once. 1 exactly, accurately, diligently.

Redeem - 1805 ξαγοράζω [exagorazo /ex·ag·or·ad·zo; Four occurrences; AV translates as “redeem” four times. 1 to redeem. 1a by payment of a price to recover from the power of another, to ransom, buy off. 1b metaph. of Christ freeing the elect from the dominion of the Mosaic Law at the price of his vicarious death. 2 to buy up, to buy up for one’s self, for one’s use. 2a to make wise and sacred use of every opportunity for doing good, so that zeal and well doing are as it were the purchase money by which we make the time our own.

  • The Christian is to take great care in his manner of life, what he does should be planned out – we are ambassadors for Christ – not living to ourselves.
  • The fool vs the wise which are we, the proverbs has much to say about both of these men.
  • Redeeming the time – whose time?  If God has purchased us, then the time we have is His time, and Jesus has already paid for it, the question is… did He get what he paid for?

How do we “buy back” our time?
