Russell Rebello was the last victim to retreived from the doomed Costa Concodria three years after the ship sank. Russel, a 33-year-old cruise waiter from India. The married father-of-two had started working on the ship just a few months before the horrific event. Witnesses said that while the captain abandoned ship, Rebello, stayed on, to help other passengers to safety and even gave up his only lifejacket.
You may remember this story that happened a few years ago in January 2012. The massive cruise ship, the Costa Concordia, with more than 4,200 passengers and crew was sailing off the coast of Italy on a tour of the Mediterranean Sea. The captain deviated from his planned course to give the passengers a closer look of the coast and, all of a sudden, the ship struck a reef near the shore.

In vs. 30 these blind men said to Jesus, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.” These men knew that God is merciful and they saw that Jesus was the Messiah and that, being from God, He would be merciful too. So they put their faith in one who is able and willing to show mercy.

We as sinners needed salvation, and God provided it, even though we didn’t deserve it.

Application:
In our passage this evening, both of these groups are radically different. In number, of course they were very different, but as you look into this passage and learn of both groups of people you will find that there is one radical difference.

A serious disability.
We start off verse 30, finding out something very important about these two men. They had a serious disability. They were blind. They physically couldn't see, but thankfully they did possess the ability to hear. The Bible says there in vs. 30 “when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.”

They both needed Christ.

In vs. 30 these blind men said to Jesus, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.” These men knew that God is merciful and they saw that Jesus was the Messiah and that, being from God, He would be merciful too. So they put their faith in one who is able and willing to show mercy.

And it's important to understand what mercy means because its more than feeling sorry for someone. I think it may involve that sometimes, but the main idea is to offer practical help to someone in need.

On one side of the street had apartments that had no trespassing signs on them and on the other side was a shopping center. At the other end of the street we saw some houses and so we just determined to go down and hit one street up and talk to anyone on the way.
As we went we found there was only 2 doors and neither of them were home and as we were walking back to the car, we met and talked to this young lady named Rosemary, as she was walking her dog. I remember going door knocking while being at a Missions Conference in the Bay Area. Sarah and I were with Joel and his family, and the street we got had a probelm. On one side of the street had apartments that had no trespassing signs on them and on the other side was a shopping center. At the other end of the street we saw some houses and so we just determined to go down and hit one street up and talk to anyone on the way.
And as we see the need here in this city and the need that’s around the world. As born-again believers, as an ambassadors for Christ,
“Are we moved with compassion and if we are, are we moved to action?”
And my friends and I, being from Hawaii, had a great time on the mainland seeing things that we’ve never seen before.

As we went we found there was only 2 doors and neither of them were home and as we were walking back to the car, we met and talked to this young lady named Rosemary, as she was walking her dog. We had a great conversation with her and was able to present the Gospel to her, but there was something preventing her from accepting Christ as her Savior.
I’ll never forget that situation because of the question that older gentleman asked my friend. He asked my friend, “If you were to die today, how sure are you that you would make it to heaven?”

and when we are moved with compassion we should then be moved to action. This is what we will see in the just a little bit, but before we jump to that I want to stop here notice a very important principle about compassion from Jesus.
A. Explanation: Jesus was moved with Compassion
Text: , “So Jesus had compassion on them,”
She looked down and saw her hands were singed.
Text: , “So Jesus had compassion on them,”
And that is for us to have compassion on others, we first have to have an awareness of others.
These hands were the same hands that had pushed people out of her way and that never helped anybody out of the building.

just like He was moved with compassion in after seeing the multitude.
She began to weep the more and said, “O, dear Lord…”
just like He was moved with compassion in after seeing the multitude.
As you look throughout Scripture you will see this principle illustrated time and time again. You will always have
someone in need
And I’m glad that we serve a Lord who has compassion on the multitudes and on the individuals.
The dignified woman sitting near her on the street car rebuked her and said, “I saw you come out of that building, you ought to thank your Lord that your even alive.”

The Convicting Question
This drove Jesus to have compassion on them and when we are moved with compassion we should then be moved to action. This is what we will see in the next point, but before we jump to that I want to stop here notice a very important principle about compassion from Jesus.
