Introduction:
We have explored the nature of our fellowship
In this lesson, we want to look at the book of First John to consider what John says about our fellowship
He offers several tests of fellowship—some things that we must have in common if we are to have fellowship with each other (e.g., belief in God and Jesus)

Tests of Fellowship

These tests must be passed in an affirmative way; if we fail in these tests, then we should not have fellowship with someone.
These tests are given, not to scare us, but to give us confidence.
Walking in the light/walking as Christ - ; ;
John provides different descriptions for this category of “walking in the Light”
We must keep God’s commandments and do as He has told us.
Commitment to the word of God - ,
We cannot depart from what God’s word says for the schemes of men
Love for the brethren -
Confess Christ -
Confess He came in the flesh (since He came in the flesh, it proves there is nothing inherently sinful about the flesh)
Confess Jesus as the Son of God

Confidence of Our Fellowship

Some of us have sorely misunderstood the nature of fellowship in First John.
Some have mocked the idea of our ability to walk in the Light and to keep God’s commands.
Some have accused people of believing in sinless perfection and that we can never know if we are in or out of fellowship with God.
Fellowship with God can be known. John writes this letter so we may know that we have fellowship with God and that we can know we have eternal life - ;
Sometimes we do sin and we are in darkness and out of fellowship with God, but that fellowship can be restored.
Our advocate -
Our confession and repentance -
It is through Jesus Christ, His blood, and our obedience/repentance/confession that we may know we have eternal life!
Conclusion
First John is a book that shows us the beauty of our fellowship with one another and with God and Jesus Christ
We may have eternal life if we obey God’s commands
And when we do sin, we can come back to fellowship with God when we acknowledge our wrongs and do what is right.
