A New Name

What is your identity?
Where do you get your identity from?
If you are wandering if this is truth in finding our identity, I want to point out several characters in the bible who went through a process in finding their identity.
Jacob became Isreal
Abram became Abraham
Sarai became Sarah
Saul became Paul
Simon became Peter
John become ‘The One Whom Jesus Loved’
Jesus became Christ and the Son in whom I am pleased.
and the Son in whom I am pleased.
Son of man become Son of God
Sons and daughters of man become sons and daughters of God who say Abba Father
There are also stories of people trying to be defined by mankind rather then God.
Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah to Shadrach, Meshack and Abed-nego
Daniel to Belteshazzar ()
Just from these alone you can see the battle.
Father is calling out who you are.
The enemy wants you to forget or never figure out who you are.
Lets look at Jacob’s story a little more.
Genesis 32:28 NASB95
28 He said, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed.”
Genesis 35:10 NASB95
10 God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; You shall no longer be called Jacob, But Israel shall be your name.” Thus He called him Israel.
Years later he is still going by Jacob.
Genesis 35:10 NASB95
10 God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; You shall no longer be called Jacob, But Israel shall be your name.” Thus He called him Israel.
Jacob = “heel holder” or “supplanter”
Israel = “God Prevails”
It is important to see how this process takes hold so we to can take our new name.
Genesis 35:18–21 NASB95
18 It came about as her soul was departing (for she died), that she named him Ben-oni; but his father called him Benjamin. 19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). 20 Jacob set up a pillar over her grave; that is the pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day. 21 Then Israel journeyed on and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder.
Ben-oni = “son of my sorrow”
Benjamin = “son of the right hand”
Jacob = “heel holder” or “supplanter”
Strong, J. (1995). Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon. Woodside Bible Fellowship.
Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon 3478 יִשְׂרָאֵל

Israel = “God prevails”.

Israel = “God Prevails”
Israel would name his son Benjamin, son of the right hand.
Jacob would name his son Ben-oni, son of my sorrow.
Gen 35:
Rachel was a symbol to Jacob of what heal grabber needed to be somebody.
When he excepted he was God Prevails, he made decisions from that place and it produced the life he had been wrestling for.
Even the place was renamed in this scripture.
Ephrath = “ash-heap: place of fruitfulness”
Beth-lehem = “house of bread (food)”
Beth-lehem = “house of bread (food)”.
Something must die so it can become food for humanity.
Your false identity must die, so your true identity can bring life.
Our old name
Bread and food refer to doing the will of God.
Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah to Shadrach, Meshack and Abed-nego
New American Standard Bible: 1995 update. (1995). (). La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation./ Shadrack, Meshak and Abendigo
Daniel to Belteshazzar ()
Belteshazzar
Your old identity is often defined by what happens to you.
Your true identity is defined by what facet of God flows through you.
Your old name must die so you can live from your new name.
The wrestle continues through out Israel’s life.
When he was told his son Joseph was killed he is Jacob.
Just from these alone you can see the battle.
When
Father is calling out who you are.
The enemy wants you to forget who you are.
Everything flows through an identity.
If you believe you are worthless and you wont make a difference in this world, you will take actions from that place and fulfill that identity.
If you believe you will bring heaven to earth, you will take actions as if that is true and it will manifest heaven on earth.
It is time we live from believing what our Father says we are.
Closing:
Confess your old identity.
Let it die.
Accept your new name.
You are loved, You are not alone.
You are a son or daughter of the King of Kings.
You are the favored one.
You are one with Christ
You are where heaven touches earth.
You are a mother who brings life to your children.
You are a father who raises giant killers.
You are bread to the nations.
Daniel 1:7 NASB95
7 Then the commander of the officials assigned new names to them; and to Daniel he assigned the name Belteshazzar, to Hananiah Shadrach, to Mishael Meshach and to Azariah Abed-nego.
